Chipping a 1.6

Featured Replies

I find myself contemplating getting my 1.6 Octavia chipped, and was

wondering if anyone has heard of this done, or just have other bits of

advice?

A websearch doesn't bring up a lot, the closest I can get is Superchips

who do solutions for the Golf and Seat 1.6 but no mention of the Octavia.

It is the same engine, isn't it?

This only suggests a +8hp increase, but I'm not really aiming for huge

amounts of power (engine transplant would be most effective  ),

rather smoother delivery, better throttle response and better fuel economy

would be good. I also don't want my insurance company to throw a

hissy fit over huge increases

So would anyone recommend Superchips? My nearest dealer is Ric Wood

in Davenport, who I once took my Astra to and my mate used to work

for, so I'd trust the workmanship. Is the chipping actually a replacement

chip, or do they just fiddle with the existing one?

Rob.

I would.

I've had mine in for about 50,000 miles so far, no problems.

How about induction? and an exhaust? Someone must do them. You are correct though, it won't set the world alight, but it will probably be more driveable.

For the ultimate you need some splitfire leads and a magic tree airfreshener!

I'd say a chip will not see much increase, but can be mapped to make the best of other mods...

I'd suggest induction \ exhausts \ cams first, then chip last, that should see some better figures, like you say it may not set the world on fire but should sharpen throttle response and give it a little extra bite.

Should keep the insurance co fairly happy too.

Jon - I've already got the Magic Tree, went for the vanilla one but

haven't told the insurance company. Hopefully I should be able to hide

the smell from in investigators if I have an accident

I was thinking about the exhaust as I saw Butts do sports silencers with

a chrome finish for the 1.6/1.8 non-turbo for 140 quid. Maybe I'm a

bit cycnical but the words "sports" and "chrome" just made me think

it would only serve to look shiny and make a noise...any ideas whether

this would be the case or would it actually be functional? As for

declarations to the insurance company...I know Ian's advice is to tell

them no matter what as it's not worth the risk, and *normally* I'd agree,

but it's just a silencer...

I guess an upgrade to the downpipe would be about

I've been very pleased with my Superchip.

Power delivery is very smooth right up to the red line and quite linear in delivery, although mines a diesel obviously.

If smoothness is what you want then it might be worth a look.

Mine was done by Prima Racing in Nottingham.
