dented vrs wheel

Featured Replies

Whilst pulling on to the dual carriage way I hit something (no idea what, presumably hardcore or something fallen off a lorry, I didnt see it in the dark as I was pulling on the carriage way) which has burst the rear tyre and put a dent in the rim of the wheel. Any idea if the wheel can be safely repaired (I hit the object at about 70) or does it sound like a new wheel would be needed? If so any idea of cost? I've done a quick search but the details are sketchy. Be nice to get an idea before I go to the dealer and pass out at the cost.

Seeing as the wheel is the only contact between you and the road, I would take no chances and replace the entire thing.

In any case, trying to balance the wheel would be difficult if it has a 'dent' (you don't say how big or severe) in it. This would have tyre life implications etc, and the handling of the car may well be dodgy!

Its a bit like re-using a motorcycle helmet after a smash...........you wouldn't!

lucky not to have hit the front wheel also , i agree with Organist , new wheel required and of course a tyre also , best part of £200 i would think poss more , maybe you could go back and try and spot what you hit

Some flat spots/dents can be rolled out of alloys perfectly safely. It's worth taking it to a reputable alloy wheel service centre - they will soon tell you if they can do it or not.

for the cost of a new alloy compared to the cost of a repair i'd go with the new alloy, the repair will be about 35/40 quid and i think a new alloy is only about 80

Got any pics of it?

No pics I'm afraid, technical difficulties (bust my cam). The dent although not massive does look like it could be a pig to sort. The outside of the wheel also has some scratches from whatever hit it. I'd go back and look for whatever it was if it wasnt so far from where I live.

I spoke to a local dealer and a new wheel is 150 quid. So with a Bridgestone Turanza ER300 tyre about 250 quid. Could be worse. As with the general consensus, I've ordered a new wheel to be on the safe side. Rather spend a few more quid now and be safe than save a few pennies and total the car (and possibly myself) later.
