Experience in Petrol Remapping?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Has anyone ever had experience in remapping a 1.4 16v or 2.0 8v petrol motor? Are the gains worth the trouble? What mod gives the best bang for the buck?

Thanks,

NR

I have a 1.4mpi that I got remapped by BBR Gti, now known as morego - Performance Car Tuning Specialists - Air Filters, Conversions, Dash Kits, Exhausts, StarChip, Valves .

They are an older company and have been remapping petrol injection cars since well before the current vogue of chipping TDIs and serial port remapping, and they are just about the only company who was interested, or able, in doing a map on an older petrol engine.

You get around an extra 10% bhp/lb ft. The gain on the 1.4mpi is not so great at the top end as being 8v it doesn't breathe as well as a 16v BUT it certainly has given me a much fatter torque curve and sharper throttle response, that is noticable. I would think the torque inprovement to the 2.0 8v could be quite good.

I had a full remap done and saw the ECU graphs for fuelling, ignition advance etc before and after, and there was a clear improvement (there were loads of dips on the OEM map that had been smoothed out).

With a full remap you can get the ignition advance changed to take benefit of the current range of 98/99 octane petrols (although I think the 1.4 16v is set for 98 octane as standard) as well.

The gains in terms of 'bang for your buck' are not as great, nor as obvious, as a remap for a TDI or petrol turbo engine but certainly make driving more enjoyable and if you're keeping the car for a couple of years will be worth it.

Thanks for the info.

It would be interesting to know if the remap gets rid of the throttle response hesitation that comes standard with the 16v motor. ???

Custom-Code offer remaps for the 1.4 and 2.0. Details can be found here: Custom-Code - The Latest Innovation in Serial Port Chip Tuning Technology. Remap VW - Audi - Seat - Skoda - Fabia

Noticable gains can be had for free by tweaking the timing yourself using a program such as custom settings or lemmiwinks. This is particularly on effective on larger engines such as the 2.8 V6. However this method won't give the full gains that can be achieved by a remap as the timing can only be altered globally.

The remap certainly got rid of any hesitations in my 1.4mpi. The 1.4 16v may be different being a newer (VW) engine with different emmissions requirements BUT I would expect a remap to improve the hesitations and throttle response.

Certainly after my remap the fuelling curve was nice and smooth wheras before it had loads of dips theat would have reduced fuelling at certain rpm and resulted in hesitations (perhaps).

Very interesting bahn...

How has your fuel consumption and reliability been since the remap?

It would be good to have some hard data on the 16 valve motor. I would expect that the remap probably bypasses some of the emissions programming altogether.

Is this just a matter of sending the ecu in, or does the whole car have to go?
