VAG COM serial cable

Featured Replies

If no one uses the usb cable, does anyone run the VAG-COM through a usb with a serial port adapter?

If no one does, does anyone going to the Essx meet on sanday have a vag-com and/or a usb-serial port adapter

I'm sure you know that USB to serial is not supported or recomended by Ross-Tech. To much time delay to work well.

I do now, thank you.

Something from Uwe Ross off MarkIV forum:

USB<->Serial converters are plenty fast when you're moving big chunks of data, but the old VAG protocol (KW1281) doesn't move big chunks, it moves one byte at a time. The problem with USB<->Serial converters in this application is latency. The "turn-around" time can be as much as 16mS, which is too long for many control modules.

In addition, many USB<->Serial converters do not properly support some of the non-standard baud rates that the control modules want (example 10,400 baud is a MUST for modern cars).

If you find a USBM<->Serial converter that works with everything in your car, fine, use it. Just understand we don't recommend or support them because of the above issues.

Dell ones still have serial ports - I've just ordered one myself.

I brought a decent samsung one with a dvd rw, so i can use it for other apps and wont be obsolete for another 5 - 10 years (as long as i can still buy batteries). Toys r us sell a good model too (athough the i've never heard of the brand) but the samsung was cheaper.
