TIRES : What does the '82' mean in 175/65 R14 82T

Featured Replies

hi, i was just looking at my winter tires for the Fabia (not used them as yet, summer just a bit longer here) and seen the markings as follows:

175/65 R14 82T

what does the 82 mean? I tried Googling it but could not see....

thanks,

Andrew

It's the load rating.

See here for all the information you could possibly want about tyres.

The 82T is the safe load for a tyre, although it won't be in Tons must be another weight measurement

T is the speed rating

very informative. thanks for all your responses. that Car Bible on Wheels is some great bed time reading....

Whilst I have this thread open, I was wondering, if I got a slightly larger wheel (large outer circumference on rubber tire), would it make the Fuel Economy better? e.g. to go the same distance, the wheel would spin less times. Or would the benefits be so small that it would not make any difference?

I was reading some other threads in this forum about getting worse Fuel Economy upon people changing their tires. I was wondering why this could be...

The usual reason people lose / gain economy on tyre changes is the stickiness or otherwise of the compound. Stickier tyres = more grip = more rolling resistance = less economy.
