Panic re engine oil

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, not sure which forum to post this in-I'm the [proud??] owner of an Octavia Sport 2.0 tdi bought new in Feb 2006-currently about 13500 miles on the clock-last week was the third time that the oil warning light came on and engine oil had to be "topped" up-the mechanic claims its just the engine "running in". However I've never had this with the 3 previous Audi A4's that I've driven-should I be worried or is this normal? Thanks for any advice

Do you not make a habit of checking it weekley?

I think I would and keep an eye on it. That does seem at little excessive to me, what sort of driving do you do?

1 litre of oil per 600 miles is permissable.

However it should get less after 20k.

 600 miles surely you mean 1 litre per 6,000 miles????

Nope, factory limit is actually 1 litre per 1000km (approx 600 miles).

:wow: @ about

Although that is a maximum not a target Steve!!

The PD TDi engine is well known for using more oil during the first 20K miles than normal. After this it should use very little, my dealer even advised me this but I already knew it.

I once had a Citroen XM 2.0 and it needed a litre of oil everytime I filled it up with petrol.

Thanks for the replies-I do very little town/city driving-mostly main road/motorway

driving-anything from 10-100 miles one way trip.Yes I know I should check my oil

weekly-but to be honest don't.Hopefully then after 20,000 miles I shouldn't have this

problem.-thanks again

once you have bedded the engine in, then don't drive it really easily as a mechanic told me that if you baby the engine a film builds up on the walls of the bores (due to the longlife oils chemical make up) which means the oil can get past much easier than it should.

Not sure how true it is, but certainly having seen a 1.9TDI that was drinking it given a good hard run a few times and the oil consumption reduce considerably then I can belive it.
