Sat Nav & Interior

Featured Replies

Ok, just done a deal on a Superb Elegance (subject to my old car not being found following its recent theft) and have a couple of questions.

Apologies if this has been covered, I have searched and could not find the detail.

I get a Sat Nav unit in the car however from reading on here it seems that this unit is OK at best. Can the unit be changed for one of the DVD based units? If so I assume the console trim would need changing as the newer nav units have bigger screens.

Secondly, the trim is not 100% to my liking (not so keen on the wood). Are there any other trims that it can be swapped for (e.g. aluminum effect). Not sure how this would work re: swapping the nav unit.

Any comments appreciated and apologies if I have missed this being covered elsewhere.

Cheers

As far as I know, the oem sat nav unit is double-din. It should therefore be a straight swap for any other double din unit. The wood can be changed and I know Baker21 has done his and will probably post the prices envolved.

fluffy01016 - thanks. Will be interested to hear Baker21's comments. I will also try to search out any details he has already posted.

Is not the OEM sat nav in VW's DVD? Should swap straight over

  • Author

yes it's DVD - just not sure on the mechanics of the fit. having looked further I think the overall unit is the same size so should just be a straight switch.

Be interested to hear if anyone has done the change.

All VAG OEM Sat Nav's, if they are double dinned, are the same size and the only thing that differs is the cage holdig them in the dashboard depending on what vehicle you have.

As far as I am aware the only other VAG OEM Sat Nav you will be able to fit into this gap is the VW MFD unit and that is not a DVD unit. Obviously if you fit a VW unit or other you will have colour illumination problems as VW is RED / Blue and Skoda is Green. The new MFD2's are a completely different size and shape and will not fit the Superb's dashboard.

I replaced the surronds on some dashbord inserts, like you wish to do, as I hated the wood look:

I also painted the wood effect in my Bora as I couldn't afford the Alu trim inserts, you can also see the MFD unit here:

Thanks for taking the time to reply Baker21.

With regards the trim inserts, did you change these yourself? If so was it an easy switch?

I assume the trim is from a different Superb model?

I was hoping the MFD2 would fit as overall the dimensions would be the same (shame it is not). I may see about changing for the AVIC unit if I don't like the Skoda Nav system.

Thanks again for taking the time for replying. From looking at your other posts your car looks great!

No worries mate and thanks for your comments.

I basically just replaced the centre trim section as it was wooden and it's one solid piece and comes out very easily if you pull it off from the bottom near the ashtray and work your way up, wasn't expensive either.

The trim itself I just hunted down on my CD Parts guide that I got off Ebay, I can sort some part numbers out for you if you like?

With regards to the Skoda DX unit, this unit is very old so don't expect much from it but it does the job and looks better than a single DIN stereo IMO.

Thanks Again.

If you get the chance to sort out the part numbers that would be appreciated.

From what you have seen is there a way to modify the cage to get other Nav units to fit or is it a case of lack of size?

Thanks

I am currently on holiday in America but I will be back a week on Monday so I will dig out some part numbers no worries.

You can make 'anything' fit with a little modification but if you want OEM then you are pretty much stuck with the DX unit.

Thanks mate, thinking of shipping my Superb over here if I move out here, no Skoda's on the road in the USA!!! LOL!!

After six months with my Superb I bought the 2006 'TMC' navigation disk to get the TMC feature working but found it was no good for incident avoidance - only roadworks seemed to show. That and failed attempts to replace the CD changer with 1) a Phatbox then, 2) my iPod with a Dension adaptor.

I phoned an oem Satnav specialist and was told the new MFD2 was way to big to fit as a replacement. (I'm still not sure he understood the question - oh well, his loss if he got it wrong!)

So, 4 days ago I had the whole lot taken out and replaced with an Alpine Double Din head unit with iPod link, steering wheel control link and matching DVD satnav. The head unit has gone straight into the hole in the dash and the satnav has taken the space in the boot where the CD changer was. Sadly, the dot display between the speedo and rev counter no longer serves as a repeater for satnav directions but I'm told Alpine might have this available for VAG cars in the not too distant future. (The screen on the Alpine is so big I don't really miss it too much anyway).

The damage? Supplied and fitted for £1,500 but I reckon I'll shave a bit off when the old kit gets auctioned.

Worth it? Depends what price you put on not having to reach in the boot every time you get fed up with the six cd's, a better chance of not getting caught in tailbacks and a generally better tuner and power output. Oh yes, and it does most of Europe too so, a keen traveller might save time/money by not having to maintain a library of navigation cd's ;-)

Hi Don, thanks for the post.

Would be interested in a link to the actual unit you have....plus where you got this done.

The helpful non-pressurised advice and quality fitting job were provided by Audiofile Incar at Bishop's Stortford - can be found in Yell.co.uk

One factual error on my part. The price I quoted included a £250 rebate for the iPod link which they advised about and fitted the previous month. I didn't like it one bit so it was retrieved when the Alpine rig was fitted. My guess is the full cost after selling off the displaced kit should be around the £1,300 mark.

Hope all this helps

Don

Looks fantastic!!

Thanks Don, it does indeed look great.

Would be interested to hear in how you think it performs against the OEM Nav if you get chance.

Thanks :)

Tom Tom's may not be legal for ever in the UK as now in Belgium they are passing a new law that states you can't have anything stuck to the windscreen as it 'distracts other road users' and this is obviously in refernce to these aftermarket Sat Nav units.

Don - You have spent a lot of money there mate and it looks good, what colour does it illuminate?

Does that mean plod will have to take all their boxes of tricks out of the dashboard :) :)

Now that would be a good idea, LOL!!

I had the MFD satnav unit my Passat, and can confirm that it was a load of rubbish.

The Skoda unit is basically the same thing, but with green illumination.

I can thoroughly recommend the Pioneer AVIC-X1BT, which I have fitted to my Superb.

You can find some pictures of my install here:

I did like the look of the Alpine unit that Don has installed, but I needed the second DIN slot for my MP3 player (which is still way better than an iPod).

Bagpuss.

It's fair to say that the DX / MFD unit is considerably older than your current setup mate and therefore a little unfair to say it's 'rubbish'?

The DX / MFD unit serves it's purpose in my eyes as an OEM Sat Nav unit but granted now times have changed the newer MFD2 or even Audi RSN-E units are streaks ahead.

Nice set up by the way mate.
