Turbo wastegate actuator Tech question

Featured Replies

Hi guys, newbie around!! been looking for Navara forums but can't find any!

It was suggested that I try you guys as there is a weealth of knowledge on here!

I used to have an Octavia Elegance 1.9TDi 110 which I miss a lot, Had it for two years and 160,000 odd miles, and not a problem!! I want another !!

ANy way to the question. I have a Navara at the moment and it seems to be lacking power (seriously lacking) it feels like the turbo isn't boosting properly. you can hear it spinning up, but there is no power from it. It has been suggested to me that it might be the waste gate actuator stuck open, and when the end is revved up and then you lift off there is no movement in the actuator arm. also there is no free play in the arm when the engine is off, I've been led to believe that there should be a significant amount of play on the arm but the thing is solid!!

Has any body any ideas what could cause this or what can be done? Any ideas how much free play there should be or how much the arm will mov when releasing the pressure.

Any help is massively appreciated!! I know this vehicle is not you speciality, but like I said you guys come highly recommended for tech advice

Cheers

John

whats a Navara ?

A Nissan Utility vehicle oddly enough.

to be honest the wastegate actuator are normally stiff anyway, and you'll only ever see it move when the turbo is up to full boost anyway...

i've got a feeling that the nissans have a vnt turbo anyway which means that technically it doesn't actually have a wastegate as such. it has vanes which kind of alter thier angle which regulates the speed of the tubine and therefore boost pressure, also this system maximumizes air flow through the compressor over a wide operating range....

tbh you are better off getting a re-con turbocharger if it's in any doubt..

Also worth checking all the hoses are on properly and not split as this seems to be a common problem with turbo diesels :D

Searh on here for sticky turbo will turn up instructions on cleaning the sticky turb o vanes on VNT turbos.

If your pickup has these then this might be an issue, but then again it might not.

I guess it could be related to a knackered Air Flow Meter (AFM or MAF), but then i would doubt you would hear the turbo boosting like you are.
