spooky MFD

Featured Replies

turned on the radio/ MFD/ Sat nav (Octy elegance 1.9tdi) this morning and the display was really dull, could hardly read it. Tried adjusting the contrast (there's no brightness control) but fully up I couldn't read it. Stopped for diesel and when I restarted the car eh presto a nice bright screen... what's goin on ????

Could it be that it was a little cooler last night with a little more moisture in the air so the unit had to "warm up" and kill off any condensation?

More likely just one of those microsoft moments! i.e everyones going to die its the end of the world *switch off* - *switch on* oh no, it's all ok!

You should switch career's, you have all the right skills m8.

Don't forget the MFD screen auto dims depending on outside light levels, the same way the maxidot does.

It might have got a little confused and cranked the brightness right down.

I have not noticed the Maxidot dim automatically ???

so really the only thing left is for the car to steer and we are away.... johnny cab springs to mind !

Was trying the 'autodim' on my MFD 1 the other day... shinning a torch on it... pretty neet trick they've added on it! Sensor on MFD 1 is by flashing light, can't say where it is on MFD2

Mine went dim on my Oct RS, It seemed to be linked to the the dash lighting adjuster was not on max. Had headlights on at time of problem and had just set out for continent, thought the unit had packed up for a moment

Maxidot and MFD2 dim together on my elegance, not sure where the sensor is but there are a few possibilities:

The light sensor in the dimming mirror

A light sensor in the rain sensor module ?

The small black shiny "thing" in the middle of the central dial on the climatronic ?

It must be the same sensor that determines when the puddle lights come on when it's dark enough

Either way, it does auto dim and is most obvious if you turn the dash illumination to lowest setting with sidelights on during the day. The adjuster merely offsets the autodimming to a degree.

I take it on the MFD2 you have a day and night setting ?

Yes, it goes to night mode when you turn the side / headlights on, and day mode when they are off. there is also a button on the top left of the mfd2 to switch manually between modes.
