Octavia vRS better than Audi S6 Quattro?

Featured Replies

Neil Lyndon in today's Sunday Telegraph magazine seems to think so.

While I was driving the S6, I kept pining for the Skoda Octavia vRS we are keeping at home at present. With its needle-sharp alertness and delicate communication of sensation, the Skoda offers every pleasure to the driver that the S6 withholds. It is also very nearly as fast, carries all but a few cubic centimetres as much luggage and costs less than half as much money.

Well done, Octy! :)

i know which i'd rather have and it isn't built in the czech republic.

I know which I'd rather have too ..... but there's no doubt the Skoda is better value for money. But then the S6 is a "sporty luxury car" whereas the Octy vRS is a "performance hatch" - so it should be sharper to drive.

Hardly comparable cars imho.

I agree. Two car's completely different.

nearly as fast?

V10 is it not? i was expecting about 5-6sec to 60 is it really near the octy at 7.2? :)

I ran an old shape S6 with the V8 for 18 months.

I now run an MK2 Octy vRS and believe me it would need a reasonable amount of engine mods to be as quick.

I would estimate it is around 60-70% of the S6.

But in the real world things such as running costs come into it and the Octy wins hands down. 18mpg, servicing, cambelts, etc

As for the new one. I have driven it but only at rather sedate speeds so cannot really compare. V10 sounds great though.

AUDI S6 97-04

Engine Size 4172 cc

Cylinders 8

0-60 mph 6.5 s

Power Output 335 bhp

Valves 40

Torque 420 Nm

Top Speed 155 mph

so its quicker on paper but not feel it due to the sheer comfy-ness of it.

im guessing the new V10 will be even quicker too

you ask and i oblige, looks good

Engine Size 5204 cc

Cylinders 10

0-60 mph 5.0 s

Power Output 428 bhp

Valves 40

Torque 540 Nm 398 lb-ft

Top Speed 155 mph

wow that is fast!

and if the octy "is very nearly as fast" im off to the skoda garage

Two different cars entirely!

As someone already said, I know which I'd have ;)

Yes, it was a bit of a strange comparison, but it's interesting that someone would prefer to drive the "half the price" Octy rather than the S6.

in the 'real world'of traffic, junctions, rough roads and tight parking spaces, it may well just be easier and more pleasant to drive than the S6.

"nearly as fast", means that the 'useable' performance is little different in those real-world conditions where the 100-150mph dash has little relevance!

well im guessing the S6 would have more useable power everywhere tbh, the V10 im sure has a pretty wide powerband and the 0-60 is over 3 sec quicker and im sure the 30-70 and 50-70 is a fair bit quicker too.

but then yeah the octy is slightly smaller so will be easier to use in car parks and tight areas but then a clio 197 would be even easier

Yes, the S6 will be faster 30-70 and 50-70, but in terms of distance it won't be THAT FAR. ie. in reality, the vRS is quick *enough*. Unleashing the V10 won't always be practical....

Yes, but the Clio would not be as pleasant a place to be....

I think the point is that, nowadays, a warmed-up family car costing less than £20K is not a million miles away (in terms of quality, driving enjoyment and ease of ownership) from a super saloon costing a lot more.

If it was my money, I'd have the Skoda hatchback. Even better, I'd have a hack Mondeo TDCi estate and a sports car/bike ;)

 nothing is ever quick *enough* :o

but yeah, i just thot it was a very odd comparison by the chap

Not really. He's expressing an overall 'preference' for one four doored, five seater, four wheeled box for transportation over another. Thrust SSC is very fast, but it would be a pain to live with.

they are completey differend groups.

in that case surely you could then compare a polo GTi with an S8? or M5? which seems a bit pointless to me

Ultimately, they're all cars and do exactly the same thing. The guy likes the way the Octavia drives.

no matter, can do without an arguement this week thanks

all i mean is they are classed as different sized cars, one is a saloon the other a hatch, one is 4wd one is FWD, etc but hey each to their own

i just dont see peope having a choice of which car to buy having the choice between an S6 or an octy vRS thats all, shoot me if im wrong

It's not an argument, I can just see the point the guy is making.

I agree, I don't really see people that are properly in the market for an S6 would also have a vRS on their list or cars to look at

:)

"properly in the market"? Do you mean somebody who wants to spend X thousand pounds on a car, whether it's good or not?

 The point is that that the journalist is giving his opinion about the relative merits of two cars, which suggests that despite what may be indicated on paper, the cheaper car is actually pretty good.
