Today I Have Been Mostly Driving...

...a Peugeot 307CC :gay:

Just done 1200 miles (over he last 4 or 5 days - not just today!) in a 307CC and on the back of the C2 mini-review I decided to post my own.

The Celica's gone and this is in it's place. What a difference.

It's a 2.0 140 petrol 5 speed with all the toys. The cabin is pretty well appointed and it has every toy you could want - Sat Nav, 4 Electric Windows, Electric Hard top, reversing sensors, confusing computer controlled everything, phone (pop in your SIM card), trip comp and much more.

On the road the most evident weakness is the chassis - roadholding is poor bordering on frightening - there is so little grip (despite P Zero tyres) that driving in the wet becomes a guessing game when it comes to how much grip is left. The steering is vague and offers absolutely no feel - even compared to a Fabia vRS (which IMHO offers little feedback).

The biggest let down is not the handling, it is the engine. Obviously coming from a diesel I expected a torque defecit but changing down to 4th at 60mph to climb hills is unacceptable from a 2 litre engine. Vans beat you into lane 2 from a slip road and the rev limiter (which you are forced to get up to to make progress) is massively intrusive, cutting the power immediately - surely a softer limiter like the 1.9TDi would be a better option. It is immediately noticable that the car is heavier than intended for this engine.

That's the bad out of the way - the car is very refined (barring a little scuttle shake - even with the hard top up) and quiet at motorway speeds, the exhaust note is quite pleasing when pushed and the assortment of gizmos keeps you occupied on long journeys. One criticism is the radio which does not seem to offer a simple 'tune to the next station' function - the radio does not automatically hold onto stations as you travel distances - manually retuning Radio 2 does get tiring! SWMBO quite liked it though

In short, if you're a fan of driving, this isn't the car for you, but if you are an A to B type that wants something well appointed and (if you like that sort of thing - I don't) stylish then it's well worth a look. :D

Edit: Forgot to mention the gearstick can be moved around like in neutral when it's in gear!

Interesting review - I've often looked at both the 307CC and the Megane version of the same car and wondered what they're like.

If I was in the market for such a car I think the Astra hard-top open-top would be my choice.

Interesting!....Yeah like Goochie I'd go for the Astra version or the VW Eos!

I think the Eos is a good looking car, but it really is very pricey! If you coul dget a decent spec'd Eos for £20k it would be a no-brainer.

Not sure what the Pug retails at but I guess it is around the £18k-£20k mark ?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure our work cars are all 20kish.

Edit: 28.9mpg over the last 4k which is identical to what I got over the last 1200.
