Been pikey modding the MR2

Featured Replies

Hi to All

Looking at the MR2 for ways to get a bit more power, it seemed obvious that the standard inlet ducting was a potential bottleneck. The ducting is 3" diameter and runs around the side of the car from the air vent just behind the passenger door, via a space under the rear NS tail light cluster and forward to the airbox.

Just under the light cluster, there is an elbow shape where the pipe is reduced in diameter to under 1.5" and then tapers gently out to 3" again just before the airbox. Rumour has it that this restriction is in the ducting to reduce induction noise. This obviously weakens the induction pulses to get the result, so could be a good thing to replace it.

The solution: 14" of 3" diameter Flexflyte high temp piping and two stainless steel jubilee clips. Remove restrictor and replace with said flexi tube.

The result is quite noticable. Low rev part throttle response is improved by a decent amount. The midrange always felt like it was holding back, kind of lacking the expected punch from 3500 - 4500 rpm. It now feels completely natural and much livlier from 3500 rpm upward, with no restricted feeling at all. Along one of my favourite test routes tonight I was seeing significant improvements in speed at the end of the straights. The downside is a little more induction noise when really going for it, but

Downside?

I'd say not...

Downside?

I'd say not...

It sounds like fun for a while, but spending a whole day thrashing around, or cruising at speed, it could get tiresome. The noise at full chat also sets off a trim rattle sometimes as well. Plus it is a poxy 4 pot, so no sonic masterpiece vvti or not.

Fair enough ;)

sounds good...where did the ducting come from?

:)

Anglia Hose and Hydraulics near Colchester, but is a generally availble heatproof ducting designed for underbonnet applications.

I did a similar pikey mod when I had a fiat uno turbo... worked a treat :)

Good job m8!

the world needs more pikey mods! :D
