Ambient lighting

Featured Replies

I like my Superb, but I had a Passat before it. It is very evident to me that Skoda have absolutely no design authority whatever, other than adding Tesco hooks, a brolly and two useless red LEDs which reflect in the pointlessly shiny gear lever end. (My LEDs were quickly fixed with black tape).

Useless LED's? It's a good job that you don't drive a decent Mercedes or Audi then!!

StuartJ - Sorry to hear about your problems mate and I hope that you do get a resolution.

What purpose do these LEDs allegedly serve, then? :P

Stuart - sorry to hear about this. It really doesn't help the brand image, does it

The LED's are 'Ambient' lighting, the same as those found in your door handles of the Superb.

There are many different forms of 'Ambient' lighting but it is meant to give the driver a comfortable feeling when driving at night and 'gently' illuminate those areas that you come into contact with most.

Check out a decent spec'd Audi or Mercedes and you will see 'Ambient' light sources everywhere!!

My old 2.0 Ghia Mondeo had door handle illumination. Never been in an Audi or a Merc though.

My standard red vRS has LEDs in the door handles and the red lights overhead. It's not a Merc though.

Personally I turn the instrument lights right down and am pleased that the radios etc. dim with them these days. I don't like too much ambient light inside the car interfering with my night vision - but maybe I'm old-fashioned.

I merely meant that Ambient lighting is very popular and more common on 'higher priced' vehicles.

the "cat-eye" red LED illumination in the superbs exists so you can do "MONSTEEER HAAAANDSSSSSS!" with your kids. worth their tiny weight in gold for my 3 year old...!

And me :D:D

I have driven many cars made by these manufacturers, some with LEDs and many without.

None of these cars has the irritating reflection on the gearlever (or any other significant reflections), present in the Superb. The insulation tape is the answer.

Wouldn't be without these cat-vision on long night journeys... it makes a big difference on longer journeys really useful.

It puzzled me at first when I bought the Sup..but now I'm used to it and find it a real classy touch:thumbup:

But when would you ever notice that the lights reflect in the gearlever? There are much more interesting things to look at through the windscreen ;)

Any unwanted reflections inside a car are a sign of poor design and constitute a distraction. The red LEDs in the Superb are a pure gimmick, put there by someone who knows little about car interior design.

No real complaints - easily fixed with black tape.

FWIW, I think its great :)

I can't see the point in the two red LED's, they don't give off that much light, from my little drive in the dark had last night, and do reflect off the gearknob on my comfort, which is a bit annoying lol

I've put the W8 lights in the Furby and the difference it makes is quite surprising. I'm always doing 90mile trips down the motorway at night and it feels much more comfortable with a slight red glow off the white seats and on my clothes.

In contrast, my brother's 335d has orange led's and you can hardly tell they are there. There's a tiny amount of orange tint on the metal bits on the dash/center console but thats about it.

Rotodiesel: Everyone has different preferences in what they want their car to have. Just because you think something is pointless/annoying doesn't mean everyone else is going to think the same. As I've said above I swear by the W8 lights I fitted afterwards in the Furby. The world would be a very boring place if everyone thought the same

I like AL myself, the Vectra had orange based in the bottom of the mirror, the Superbs red ones give off a nice glow also, and the door handle illuminations are excellent, did you ever think that the red leds are designed to hit the chrome gear surround to bounce more light around the car?
