Octavia Wet Floor

Featured Replies

Hi - would appreciate any advice anyone can give. I have an 04 Octavia tdi Elegance. Recently I discovered that the nearside rear passenger footwell carpet was wet. I managed to blot up nearly a pint of water from the carpet but remain totally puzzled as to where the ingress is from. I checked underneath and all the body bungs are present. Having dried it out as best I can, I'm fairly certain that the water is coming in when the car is left standing in the rain. It is clearly soaking into the carpet and not dripping onto it from above - either way, I'm baffled

Any ideas gratefully received

Have a search, I would think the door membranes are leaking.

hadn't considered the aircon as a possibility - will run with it off for a while. I don't think it is cos the front carpets are dry also the car is now over 2 years old. Door seals are fine also. If it was the door seals I would expect to be able to see the point of ingress but I can't.

One theory I had and feel free to shoot me down in flames if this is nonsense . . . . Does the sunroof drain go down into the sills and then pass out from there? If so, how does the sill drain? Is there any possibility that the sill drains could be blocked up with body sealing wax so that there's a build up of water within the sill which is then making its way into the rear footwell? This too seems unlikely to me as I wouldn't have thought there's any "communication" possible between the two.

The only wet I can detect is the rear nearside - nowhere else at all . . . .but it was pretty saturated.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I'm going to speak to the agents . . . will let you know what they say

Your water leak could be in the front, you notice it through the back first as the carpet is half the thickness.

And it could be the door membranes as when these leak it bypasses the seals and rolling in over the plastic sill trim.

I do seal a fair few up.

Ah ha!! I think I see where you're coming from Lummox - when you said door membranes - I thought you were referring to the rubber door seal that the door closes up against. Now that I think about it, when my golf got broken into and I had new side window, there was a polythene membrane lining the inside of the door and I guess that was to preven water draining down the windows from getting onto the inside of the door and ensuring it passes down and out the door drains at the bottom - I guess yer right and it sounds very likely to me!!

Also, it should be quite easy to see if that's where it's coming from - just sit in the car and direct a hosepipe against the window????

Cheers, appreciate the help

I would use the hosepipe outside of the car, rather than inside unless you want really wet carpets  ;)

:D :D :D - very funny!!!

I'm still not sure about this. When I first noticed the wet in the back was after the car had been parked up all night on my mum's drive - it is a steep drive and the car was pointing uphill by about 20 degrees - clearly, any water which had accumulated would make its way to the back.

I pressed some tissue into the front carpet this evening on the passenger side and sure enough - the tissue absorbed some moisture.

So, looks like left hand door membrane/s or aircon - driving with aircon off for now to see if it dries out and when I get a few minutes will check to door membranes for leaks

Is my car still under warranty for this - first registered July 04???

Should be yes as long as you havn't done over 60k miles.
