got me a X-BOX 360

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I bought meself an X-Box 360 last night whilst wandering around Tesco, got it bit cheaper than I should due to incorrect pricing!!

Anyway, I was just wondering, are they supposed to be that loud?

Sounds like theres a tornado running through the back!

How do I get to play online with it?

My PC is on BT Broadband basic at the moment with no wireless stuff so what do I need to buy to get online with it? (no phone socket anywhere near)

Would be handy to get my laptop and second PC on wireless too.

Whats the best way to go about this? I did try once before to go wireless but ended up sending the stuff back because it didn't work!

Yeah, they are noisy I'm afraid.

Does your modem use a USB port or an ethernet socket?

BT basis supply you with a USB modem if im correct, so no router connection is available to you.

i have my xbox connected via an ethernet connection to my wireless router. (see 2)

you could do it 3 ways, 3 being the cheapest:

1. buy a wireless modem / router and the xbox wireless adapter.

2. buy a modem / router and run an RJ45 cable (not crossover) connection to your xbax as i do.

3. connect your xbox to your pc using a RJ45 (crossover cable), which you can share your pc's internet connection. but you will have to have your pc switched on to use your xbox live.

if you need anymore help, im more than happy to help.

Hi yes it a USB modem (BT Voyager 105).

The Xbox is in another room to the PC so running a cable is not really practical.

I did try to go wireless once before but it wouldn't work, I bought a linksys modem/router but neither Linksys technical or BT technical could get it working.

The Modem/router just kept asking for the password to connect to BT broadband, but BT broadband dont have passwords, you are authenticated by your phoneline whatever that means, and the linksys wouldn't let you not have a password.

A little programme opens every time I turn on the computer (connect to BT broadband basic) in order to go online, so I dont know how a wirelss modem would work, because this programme will only work with the BT modem I think?

Hi, I have my 360 connected to BT Broadband via a wired modem and Ive never had any problems with it (touch wood!!!).

I know you cant connect via cables so my suggestion would be to give BT a ring. It may cost you a bit more money a month but they will upgrade your connection and most likely provide you with a lovely new wireless BT Router Modem. My friend uses the BT 2110 model and again it works fine for the 360. An upgrade may be required depending on what BT basic allows you to download as you tend to do a lot of dowloading on the 360 (demos/content additon etc).

Dont forget to mention that you are thinking of leaving BT for another provider... they dont like to lose customers and have been known to better a competitors deal!

For wireless connection dont forget you will need to buy the microsoft wireless adaptor which will probably set youback about

We dont have any download limits so that shouldn't be a problem, and the connection is 2.2mbps so should be fast enough.

Can I only use a BT modem router then?

No, any make of ADSL router will work. You just put all the settings in for your internet connection using a web browser (username, password etc.) and thats it, it should work.

I had to set up wireless for a colleague on a BT broadband connection. If the router is desperately seeking a password there are two options you can try - the first is bt and the second is 0 (that's the digit zero rather than a letter).

The BT program basically tells the modem to connect - a router is a self connecting modem for multiple systems so it wouldn't need that program (in fact is could be uninstalled one you are sure the router is stable).

Ok, so whats the best/simplest/safest modem/router at the moment that is reasonably priced?

At the time of my failed attempt with the linksys stuff I was recommended to buy a Netgear DG834GT, is that still a good one or has it been superceeded yet?

Johnjohn have you tried the following:-

BT Online Gaming: Xbox Live Home

and

Xbox.com | BT Broadband

You do need to be careful with xbox live as it requires a specific type of NAT.

I had a Belkin router that I took back and swapped for a Linksys one as it would just not work properly. I wish I could help further but I am DSL not ADSL.

Good Luck.

Hedge 68 on xbox live by the way.
