Felicia silenced.

Featured Replies

:) My wifes Felicia 1.3 has had a rattly timing chain for some time now so I decided to replace it at last!

Ufortunately the oil cap seal has gone hard, making the cap a loose fit on the rocker cover. It fell off during driving and led to this mess!

This Felicia has power assisted steering so the bracket holding the alternater/PAS pump needs to be unbolted and moved forwards. Makes the job a bit more difficult than the non PAS models.

A timing chain cover....this chain is shy you know!

Poor quality pics, but you can see how slack the old chain was and why it rattled so much!

New chain and gears fitted, and in the 2nd pic covered up!

 It's much quieter now!

I do wonder why they dont fit chains to "modern" cars like the Octavia and Fabia.

The Vectra V6 has a chain, as do many Ford V6's - so why not 4 cylinder engines?

Most modern cars do have timing chains :P

Chris

Does the 2.0 TFSI ?

Shame you cant get a retro fit chain kit for the 1.8T

that's top notch work you've done there on the old felcia..... i'm not surprised that thing rattled:)

some of the late vw engines do have a chain instead of a belt.... v5, vr6 ... the 1.4mpi skodi engine has one too....

oh and the v6 ecotec engine has a belt

i think the reason that many car manufacturers fit belts becuase they are quieter

My Dad had a 2.5 V6 Vectra which, had a chain.

I guess the US demands for longer service intervals will drive more and more engines towards chains.

iirc there is a 3.0 v6 gm engine which they fit to the saab 9000 which has a chain instead of a belt as well

2.0 HDI/TDCI 136 is chained :P

The reason they fit belts is becaause it is cheaper to do so and easier to keep it quiet. Hence you end up paying the costs as the end user.

The X25XE, X26XE and X30XE as fitted to the Vectra SRi and GSI are cambelt driven.

Have a fair bit of knowledge on them.

The 2.0 TFSI also has a cambelt.

yep, and what a sod of a job it is to change the belt on a v6 vectra too!:)

The BMW 6 cyl motors have chains also. Certainly the 3.0 and I would thus imagine the 2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 as they are all the same motor but with longer stroke for the bigger cc versions. I think.

yep, iirc the 2.8 and the 3.0 were available in both 12v and 24v versions and they both had chain driven cams. the 24v oneshave these funny cam carriers where you have to put in the hydraulic lifters first then turn it upside down, and consequently they all fall out...... silly thing..... good engines tho....

Good work on the Felicia, just gotta keep this one in my "subscribed threads" incase the bro's car gets it.

gotta be possible to fit a tensioner though?

it's not really necessary to have a tensioner, when the chain isn't worn there is no lash (slack) so it doesn't need it

I'm just used to BMW lumps with 100k min life from a chain, the tensioner also ensures quiet running I find.

plenty of room for it if you could fabricate a mount...

I'm just thinking out loud:thumbup:

if you are going to go to all that trouble of stripping it all down, then fabricating a bracket etc etc.... wouldn't it be easier to just replace the chain?? or am i missing the point??

I know what your saying, but a tensioner would reduce the chain noise-therefore making the engine quieter:D

;) It would, but you still have the usual Skoda 135/136 tappet rattle!!:D

Ours seem ok! set them every 5k miles:D

:jawsmall: i suspect if you're having to adjust your tappets every 5k then your followers are stuffed

BaH, cummins diesels have gears! no timing belt/chain change ever needed.. its the future :P

quite a lot of engines have gears instead of chains or belts. some of the chev v8 & v6 engines spring to mind:)

Not a case of HAVING to- just I find it worth the extra 20mins when doing the usual oilservice

I wouldnt be surprised if they're buggered the way my bro drives it:rofl:
