Review: 2003 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI (115) Ghia

Featured Replies

Hi,

Local Brighton dealer went into receivership last year, nearest is now Crawley Down or Bexhill, both a pain in the a$$ to get to & neither will collect/deliver for warranty or service work!

I've just purchased a nearly new 1.8tdci ghia x focus c max, will pop a word or 3 on here after a month to let you guys know what i think, I still drive an Octavia for my living though, 300k+ & still rolling along, slowly!

Your CMAX is a MK II (infact IMHO the CMAX is much better built than the standard MK II focus), whereas Toms car is a MK I Focus.

Indeed, quite different cars. :)

A small update on mine now its fault free!

The flywheel and clutch were changed under warranty (circa £900  ), and now its much quieter.

The car handles soooo well  It really does impress, although it should be better in the damp when the tyres are changed. :)

I love the big washer bottle, the heated windscreen is simply awesome, and its never used a drop of oil! I do miss the "fan" type washer jets though. Been averaging 50mpg, but I do lots of short journeys, and its up to 55/56mpg if I do longer journeys... :)

Nothing else to report, except that I like the car so much I can't see me changing it any time soon!

This is a very nice car, but it's over 50000K now and time to consider a change. Any comments would be very much appreciated

Mondeo may be a more natural change and the TDCI unit is much quieter, smoother and more refined than the 1.9 PD units. As the new one is due out this year, there's some excellent deals to be had on the last of the current shape models :D

My '02 has just ticked over 65k miles (the last 32k of those under my "care" in the last 18 months) and not one single problem to report

So can these be remapped?

  • Author

Yep, but not really recommended, as many have had injector failure due to the increased fuel pressure. Also, the gains aren't as huge as with the VAG PD engines, and 115 should bump up to 135/140bhp, but thats about the limit for the injectors, and to my knowledge nobody does uprated ones. :(

As tom says common rail has less scope that a PD system for remapping, but you can get some gains.

Certainly the TDCI 115 can be remapped to provide more torque low down, which IMHO is where it is really lacking.

Good engine, but the 115 only has a 5 speed box.

IMHO the MK II Octy and also the MK I Octy are much better internal finish than the MK II Focus, however the MKI focus is better than the MK II.

The focus really holds the road so well, with really direct steering and neither of the octavia even on sports suspension can quite match the focus for that, again IMHO.

I agree with everything that the cheese monkey just said.

And the interior of the Mk1 Focus is very nice indeed, much nicer than the Fabia for sure.

Yep - one of my favourite bits of the Focus, that dash. Bit of an improvement over the Escort! :P

Yeah, it was a bit of a shock really - going from that nice swoopy design to the Fabia, that's for sure...

Maybe I should get another one? :rubchin: - did consider it when I was looking for a TDi again last summer, but felt I was going over old ground again, deja vous etc, even though I could have got a Mk1 facelift which was subtlely different. Then again, I'd upgraded to most of the facelift bits on mine by the time I sold it :P

Also, I've always felt it would have been a different proposition if they'd manage to fit the TDCi 130 from the Mondy in there. Would probably have one if that was the case.

Again, as I've said before Tom, nice car! :D:thumbup:

Surely you mean the TDCi 155 from the Mondy :P

Chris

Yeah, that would be nice too Chris :D

Hi to all. Many thanks for your comments. (Have been away for a couple of weeks, hence no reply) Some useful remarks. I take on board the focus is a smaller car, so maybe as scooby sugested will have a look at the Mondeo.

Yes, since Saltdean Skoda went into receivership along with the dealer at Shoreham, along with the dealer at Chichester!! it has left only Crawley Down and Bexhill which both would mean a complete day for me. I understand a new dealer is / was opening up in Chichester. Has anyone further knowledge?
