Never had a diesel before...

... so apologies for being thick!! Got a Fabia VRS. Is the gear **** meant to rattle when idling in neutral?? Once you move it slightly it stops. Does anything need adjusting or is this the norm??

this is not normal and it is the gear cables that are chattering together.

mine doies this too. they tightened the cables up but they are loose again and it rattles again.

apparently there is a part to fix this with

your glow plugs heat the cylinders before you start your engine.........

I'm sure a mechanic chap told me that the glow plugs are only really used where temperatures are below -20 deg C and above that they have little effect - I guess the compression must be enough to combust the diesel?

Its my first diesel also....do they not have chokes no? I doesn't rev anymore in the mornings like a petrol would. Is this the idea of the glow plugs?

I was bothered by the same rattle, and Xav pointed out that it stops after a while.

It did, no probs

If you do a search you will find a few others had the rattle problem and the dealers are aware of it so take it in. I havn't suffered with it so I don't know if they sorted it by the time mine was made.

Dealer sorted mine in 30 mins

Never done it since.

your glow plugs heat the cylinders before you start your engine......... fuel mixture (choke) is automatically adjusted by the computer, depending on the temperatures...

If its your first diesel then can I recommend a tip for you ..that you get into the habit of double checking what fuel nozzle you have picked up at the pumps. Not all black coloured pumps are diesel ones. save yourself some grief /expense and make sure you read it and it says Diesel on it.

..sounds obvious but its easily done and a lot of people on here have nearly or have actually started to chuck in petrol out of a black pump..
