Range of 0 miles....

Featured Replies

I have only ever got to 5 miles before chickening out and fuelling up but BEWARE if you run out of fuel in a petrol car you can usually just put more fuel in, crank the engine on full throttle to pull the fuel through and ignition!

HOWEVER it is different with diesels!!!!

BEWARE if you run out of fuel with a diesel you can/may be in the position that you have to take it to a garage and get them to bleed the fuel through the fuel system to the injectors before the engine will restart. If air gets in ther fuel line the engine stops!!

I suggest you read your handbook to see what that says in the event of 'running out of fuel'.

Safe bet - get a fuel can filled up at lunchtime!!!!!

PS> DON'T QUITE KNOW HOW MY POST GOT TO THE TOP OF THIS THREAD - seems like the time of the earlier posts is out - 03-11-2006, 21:29 is tonight!! ?? !! Have you got a time machine?

What you could do is get a can full of fuel in the boot and drive it until you run out.

That way you will know when empty = empty.

I like that idea...

There are 3 litres left when the comp reads zero.

WTF my post went 3rd????

Panic over; Just spoken to my local Skoda dealer; if you run out of fuel completely you should be ok to put 5 or 10 litres in the tank, use full throuttle to pull the fuel to the engine and start up. If you get some air in the fuel line it is self-bleeding.

Best bet will be still to get some fuel and put it in your tank BEFORE you drive to the filling station - but hey, its up to you!

Look at the date/time of the original post and first reply. Someone's computer time clock was wrong!

Didn't Clarkson manage upwards of 30 miles with the range on 0 when he drove the Audi TDI to Scotland and back on a tank of diesel?

Chris

I managed almost 60 miles when I rolled off the ferry in Calais, reading 15 miles to go. I was big time carcking myself.

I never went below 50 miles left on the fabia.

Go to the garage at lunch time and fill up.

Back from lunch now, got the petrol station with no probs & brimmed the tank... just over 54l to the tank using the nipple trick.

Bloody hell that is a big expansion tank!

Thanks for all the helpful replies!

So how many miles did you do with the range on '0'?

its not relly a good idea to run the tank completely down/out , it sucks up all the ****e out of the bottom of the tank ,and could block filters etc , my record is 5 miles range when i chickened out

So... I've had to hurry to work, and I need fuel. I've arrived here safely, and all's well except...

I now have 0 miles showing on the range indicator.

The fuel needle is still in the red, just, and I was wondering... do I risk driving the 3.2 miles to the nearest petrol station, or do I get a lift from a colleague to buy a jerrycan of diesel at lunchtime?

Running a completely standard vRS...

Help by lunchtime would really, really be appreciated! :o

I've went 40 miles past zero on the motorway, but every cars different.

I have been 10 miles after 0 on the counter. You should be fine, but try to drive in an economical manner :D . All the usuall disclaimers apply if you do end up pushing though ;)

What you could do is get a can full of fuel in the boot and drive it until you run out.
