Digital SLR

Featured Replies

Just bought myself a Digital SLR yesterday.

Nikon D50.

Now just gotta teach myself to use it, been flicking through the manual and I'm already confused.

Anyone else got a similar camera?

 A familiar feeling.

I went for the Canon 350D over the Nikon, but there are a few people on here with the D50...

Think mine is a D70....

I have the D50 and found it relatively easy to use (especially on the point-and-shoot auto setting) I'll try and help with any questions you have.... :D

Cheers Chris, but the point and click auto setting is going to be what I'm trying to avoid. I've got a standard Sony Digital camera for those moments, bought this camera for decent shots of wildlife, landscapes, buildings etc.

I need to start playing with aperture and shutter speeds and white balance to try to understand all of that. :o

Going to the Isle of Man next weekend, so i'll get a good chance to use the camera there. My Dad should be able to help me too, because he has an analogue Nikon SLR.

Try Pistonheads Gassing Station - on the Photography and Video section - some good links stickied at the top of the page for photography tips. Most of the settings across cameras (DSLR's) are pretty standard fair, as long as you know which menu or button to press to change the one you want to, the rest can be picked up from any advice, regardless of camera (e.g. white balance settings, aperture priority modes, ISO film speed etc. etc.)

One handy tip, particularly with white balance, if you've got the card space, and the software to play with them (think Nikon are stingy with their RAW software) then shoot in Raw or Raw + JPEG, Raw allows you to undo some of the potentially stupid mistakes the camera's internal auto white balance sometimes makes, particularly as we get to that cold season where there is lots of white stuff around and funny light...

One of the main advantages of an SLR is the speed it can take pictures at - a benefit which is quickly negated if you start trying to manually adjust all the settings for each shot. So if you're just after good pictures, you might as well just use the auto modes...

Talk Photography is a good forum site I was recently inroduced to, good source of knowledge I would think!
