SatNav Security.......

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I just thought i'd post this info for anybody who has/uses a satnav in their cars after an incident i had on Friday night.............. It may already be common knowledge but i thought i'd post it to be on the safe side.

I had my car broken into on Friday night while I was at the Sheffield Arena. Nothing was stolen but after speaking to the police Friday night it looks as though the thieves were after my TomTom. I hadn't got the TomTom in the car but the bracket was fixed to the windscreen. The police have said that the biggest cause of car crime at the minute is satnav theft. The thieves look in car parks / roads / driveways for a car with a satnav bracket and break into the car to check the glove box. They have even started to look for the marks left by the suction cup when the bracket is removed!!!

The advice the police gave me was

1. Remove the satnav from the car at all times when not in use.

2. Remove the bracket and put in your glove box or remove from the car also.

3. Wipe away any marks left by the suction cup on the windscreen.

Cheers

Dave.

There were similar warnings on BBC Midlands Today a while back. They sited EBay as a quick and simple way the theives can offload the units and make a heafty profit.

I have never left my bracket on the windscreen because it just screams come and help yourself, I have goodies in my car. I always take my KenKen with me aswell. I wonder why my bags just get bigger and bigger

Great advantage of TomTom Mobile - runs on a Symbian Nokia smart phone and therfore its with me at all times. You can also use it for navigating walking routes etc.

Same here, my ken ken is on my spv m3100 so it is always with me.

Started to take the mount off the windows now, as i saw 2 lads looking into my car at 3am when i couldnt sleep.

just happened to look out of the window at that time.

Grabbed my camera and took a snap to scare them off. Never seen to people run so fast after the flash went of.

I leave my phone mount in place all the time because I figure the scum can tell the difference between a Halfords phone holder and KenKen mount.

Yeah, its a big thing at the moment. Had to help someone at a mainline train station on Saturday after his window had been smashed by someone probably looking for satnavs. About 7 cars had been done over that night :(
