I have a 51 reg Octavia 4x4 estate in Black Magic.... bought last year after the birth of our daughter - soon found out we needed the space! Best car I have ever owned, good to drive with the benefit of some ooommph when required (and 4 wheel drive when you want to pull your dad's motorhome out of a very muddy field!).

Have had quite a few niggles in the past year, more than on any other car I have owned. It may have had a bit of a hard life before I owned it, though.

Often when I search for Octavia related things Briskoda comes up on Google, so I thought now is the time to join! Last week my engine management light cam on in a queue of traffic. The kind local Skoda dealer took it in and found out the front Lambda probe had gone. Also he said an older problem logged was either the turbo boost valve or the throttle body.... changed the probe myself yesterday (once I found out that there is a natty little tool to do the job) and the light didn't go out. So, my questions are, is it true that the dealer needs to reset the light now it has been changed, and do I really need my turbo boost valve changed? What/where is it? I can't find any reference to it in my Haynes manual or on the net.... the car seems okay but things do change gradually! Should the turbo whistle so loudly?

Gosh this has turned into an essay!

Any help would be much appreciated, especially if it is before I get to the dealer tomorrow to hopefully sort it out!

You don't need a dealer to reset the light.

A laptop and VAG-COM cable and software can be used.

If you let us know where you are and ask nicely someone may help you out.

Once the fault calls have been cleared the light should go out and you can then take it for a drive and see if any more fault codes appear.

If they do pop back and post them and someone should be able to tell you what they mean. I think the N75 valve is a common cause of problems - do a search on this forum for more information

Thanks for such a prompt reply - we live between Milton Keynes and Bedford... I've read a bit about VAG COM and have wondered how useful it can be. I have seen cables on eBay for not too much money - and have a laptop. Is it really that easy?

yeah, i have a handheld "fault reader/resetter" that I got from fleabay for a mere £20 and that will happily clear engine code faults :) (VAG COM would be better though! does alot more stuff!)

Somebody correct me if i'm wrong....i'm pretty sure you can clear any fault codes and reset the ecu by disconecting the battery for 15-20 minutes, or at least that's worked on other vag cars i've tried it on.

A vag-com cable would be a worthwhile investment though :)

VAG-COM is the best investment i've ever made and so easy to use. Now you've changed the probe it is a simple job of re-setting if however you mention there is a boost problem... this will re-light the engine management light again.

It sounds like (we had the same on our octy 4x4) theres a problem with your throttle body... we had ours changed as well, anyway.. if theres a fault logged theres a problem.
