window tints

Featured Replies

just read the window tinting sticky and was wondering how the people got on with their tinted windows at the cop shop?

does any one have any more of a clue as to what level is allowed on the front windows?

iam sure my mate had something like a 30% on the front with a 50% on the rears and then if i remember right a 75% across the back window. it looked really good and was going to do the same on my octy. just wondring if any body had done theirs in a similar way?

any other thoughts?

How about reading the sticky in this forum :confused:

I have limo from the B pillar back, nothing on the front. best way to keep in with the guys in blue.

Visual Transmission for Light

Regulation 32(10) Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

  • All motor vehicles first used before 1/4/85 - 70%
  • Motor vehicles first used on or after 1/4/85 - windscreen 75%, Other windows 70%
  • Trailers - 70%

Measurements should be carried out perpendicular to the surface in accordance with the procedure specified in the appropriate British Standard Specification.

[The requirements above have effect in relation to any tint, film or other substance or material applied to a windscreen or window as they have effect in relation to the windscreen or window itself] - from 01/01/2004.

Exceptions apply to parts of the windscreen outside the visual reference zone, windows through which the driver could not see the road, and windows, other than rear facing windows and access doors, behind the driver in goods vehicles, buses, locomotives and tractors and all windows behind the driver in an ambulance.

I believe that in TOTAL, you have to let 70% of light through the front windows, and as most manufacturers have around a 20-25% tint on as standard, putting any extra film on, no matter how thin, will send you over the legal threshold.

I posted this reply on a website some time ago shortly after the regs changed if it helps...

According to the Vehicle Inspectorate, the legal limits for visibility are 75% light through the windscreen and 70% on the front side windows for vehicles built after 1 April 1985

The regulations as far as I was aware do not apply to the rear passenger windows or the rear windscreen, as in effect you are for arguments sake making it into a van by blacking out the windows ?

The legislation that covers the tinting of windows comes under the Construction and use Regulations

This is taken from the Department of Transport Web Site

LIGHT TRANSMISSION OF GLAZING - Summary of requirements

Motor vehicles first used between 1/6/1978 and 31/3/1985 must have windows which allow at least 70% of light to pass through.

Motor vehicles first used on or after 1/4/1985 must have windscreens which allow at least 75% of light to pass through - all other windows must admit at least 70% of light.

These requirements do not apply to:

any part of the windscreen outside the vision reference zone (as defined in C&U# Regulation 32(13));

windows through which the driver is unable, at any time, to see the road;

windows in ambulances which are behind the drivers seat;

windows in buses, goods vehicles, locomotives or motor tractors which are behind the drivers seat (except those which face the rear - as defined by C&U# Regulation 32(12) - or which form all or part of an exterior door); and

windows in cars which are fitted behind the drivers seat and which bear an e mark indicating type approval to the European glazing Directive 92/22/EC.

Tinted film

C&U Regulation 32 does not specifically prohibit any window from having a tinted film applied, but a window with a tinted film which takes light transmittance levels below those specified above could be interpreted as contravening the Regulation.

If a vehicle's windows were excessively tinted by the use of stick-on film or a spray, there may be a contravention of C&U Regulation 30.

This requires that all glass or other materials fitted must be maintained in such a condition that it does not obscure the vision of the driver.

Again, it does not specifically prohibit those windows from having a tinted film applied, but doing so could be interpreted as contravening the Regulation.

I hope this clarifies the matter

But as long as you don't go silly on the fronts you'll most likely get away with it!

Mine are tinted 50/65/80% front to back and I never had any problemns in the UK. IN NZ the law is 35% tint maximum all round and my car passed the Warrant of Fitness test here.
