Will not start when hot Help Please

Featured Replies

:) Hi . Can sombody help me with this problem which has just occured on my Fabia 1.4 8 valve? Its w reg, 2000 I think  .

It only starts when cold . When warm it fails to start. We took it to our local garage who changed the plugs and gave it a simple service but the problem still exists. We do know that if we 'wiggle' the cabling which goes into a block over the top of the plugs then, it fires up. Is this a temperatue sensor location and which is maybe at fault ? We also have no temperature gauge information displayed at anytime.

As a side topic, my Octavia SLX is the best car I've ever bought .

Cheers

Hi Mate

Collant temp sensor.

That is the problem.

The sensor is telling the ECU that the engine is cold , so it could be overfuelling it.So when the engine cools down there is the correct fuelling then.

Easy job and not expensive , ask the dealers for one as yours I belive is the blue one.

As Sarah's just said, it sounds like the coolant temperature sensor's packed in. Does it sometimes sit at "cold" for an entire journey too? If so, it's definitely the problem. As far as replacing the sensor goes, click here for a DIY how-to that I did. Not that I'm shamelessly self-promoting myself or anything... ;):D

@ Sarah: The sensor I was sold for my wife's 1.4 8v was grey, and the dealer assured me it didn't make any difference - certainly the old one I removed was also grey...

:) Hi Thats great. I'll try that this weekend. The only maybe coincidental thing is that

it started up after moving the plug which is shown at the bottom of Pic 2A on the guide

on how to replace the sensor, on a cover(RHside) which goes over top of the plugs. What is that ?

I assume that there is a colour code on the switch which I must match in this case grey, but I'll check

Thanks for all the help ap0gee & AwesomeSarah .

Hi

IIRC it starts 06A919501 may be on A or B now.

These are the coolant temp sensor part numbers for the Fabia as they do superceeded from time to time.

I dont know what sensor you was on about in the pic , but I must admit , what a fantastic how to guide!!!

Blow your own trumpet!!

Thanks Sarah. I've since found out that the sensor I was on about is the connecter to the electronic ignition system. Its a solid state distributor . So its still always possible that there could be a problem with it but i doubt it as the car runs fine after its started.

The temp guage , this morning , worked for 5 miles then shut down. After I got to where I was going , I turned off then turned it over again. The car and the temp guage , started and worked ok . This problem occurs after its been left for 20 mins or so.

Thanks again for the help:D

No problem mate.

Good luck with it , but very easy to replace it , let us know how you get on

Sarah

:iagree: Hope you get everything sorted quickly and easily! :) As for the distributor, I'd agree with what you say about it running OK once started - you'd expect a solid state component to either work fine or not work at all, so I don't think that's the source of the problem. Even so, moving the plug might have restored a connection that had somehow come loose?

Best of luck, anyway, and glad to have been of help!

OK , sensor fitted . Took about 15 mins. Test drive next .:)

Although I did seem some white gunk underneath the oil filler cap which may explain my coolant loss  . I'll keep an eye on this thread . http://www.briskoda.net/forums/fabia/head-gasket-failure/66431/

Ouch that definately sounds like a head gasket problem , better get that checked asap before it turns into a big money fix!

on a 1.4 8v it is very common to get a white milky buildup on the oil filler cap and it is not always defiantly a failed head gasket

if you do short journeys it is likely to just be that

do a long journey and it will probably fade away

don't panic just keep a close eye on the coolant level when cold, if it stays still it ain't a head gasket
