Economy using lpg.

Featured Replies

I'd been wondering the last 2 days why my economy was heading into the mid 40s on my commute to work. I put it down to new 215 tyres with fresh tread putting the speedo out and having a healthy appetite for exceeding the 70mph NSL.... Then I thought I'd better check the lpg tank. Empty, and probably has been for some time. 30 litres later and I got 58mpg on the same commute. At least the kit is saving me a little diesel, if not actually helping peak performance.

LPG has the same effect on mine

At lowish boost the LPG seems to increase power enough on it's own to avoid having to drop in more derv, when you're caning it it will almost get in the way :D

Forgive my blondness, but I thought LPG could only be used with petrol engines..?

Are you therefore saying you use it with diesels too?:o

Time to change your hair colour

Lpg can be used on diesel, but needs abit more modification than petrol

I thought the compression ration in diesels was too great for LPG?

Perhaps its time to investigate:confused:

Unlike petrols where LPG is used as the sole fuel, with a diesel, it is injected as well as the diesel to improve the combustion :D

Indeed. Its a turbo boost regulated injection of lpg "GAS" - important that no liquid gets to the regulators as that = disaster for the engine. The gas (taken by a vapour take off valve on the tank) is injected into the air inlet pipe between turbo and airbox, and is designed to add more than just "air" to the combustion process.

Starts injecting a little gas at about 3PSI, and as boost rises, so the rate of injection of lpg gas rises as well (and at 2 bar it releases the gas pretty darn quick)

That's my lesson. ;) On a standard car it's supposed to clean up emissions and help with power. On a very remapped car like mine, it's doing little for the power yet, but the car trims back the fuelling a little when it realises another fuel is being injected (how it does this I don't know) and you get better economy (but are paying for gas of course)

One thing is for sure. LPG on a TDI is not a money saving mod. My system will never pay for itself, but I didn't buy it for that. I bought it for BHP.
