My car has a very sticky left over (think it was a gps receiver) on the dashboard that I'd like to clean up. What would be the best stuff to use?

Maplin sell something called label remover by servisol.

It didn't damage the dash in another car, and leaves a nice citrus smell while being excellent at removing the glue.

I would go for that sort of thing.

I would quite happily take a rag and white spirit to that. I doubt it would do any damage. Then re-black the whole dash with the usual back to black type of gunk that autoglym, et.al do.

Holts tar remover is great at shifting stuff like this...eg those do not park here stickers that are a bitch to get off (SWMBO car ..not mine ). Not sure what residue it would leave on dash, but I'm sure if you used it sparingly and removed it all it would be okay.

Any citrus based cleaner should do the trick without damaging the dash.

Nail varnish remover is great for getting rid of sticky stuff.

You got it off yet? Did you use MC2 - that's what I would have used. Great stuff

TAKE CARE, I used a bit to get some horid stuff off the plastic screen on a mobile, It melted the screen !!

Still at least the phone now has a beautiful NEW screen

Didn'y get a chance to sort that bit...white spirit should sort it.

Another vote for MC2 - Citrussy stuff would be my first choice.

As with any type of cleaning, try the least aggressive stuff first, working up to most aggressive to avoid any damage.

Finally got my finger out and tried to clean it with some undiluted MC2 and a cloth... no go :(

After that tried some de-greaser, but still, no go :(

Have now cleaned it with just water and will see what it looks like tomorrow in the daylight, but it doesn't bode well for the eco-friendly products...

Oh, and it has remained quite sticky. Not the drying paint sticky-ness, but the gooey liquid kind of sticky-ness... whatever the glue was, it sure sticks (to the wrong parts!).

For sticky remanants I tend to use nitro fuel off my RC cars (as a last resort of course!) and that is brilliant at removing sticky - mainly because of the alcohol content. So Im sure like every modern male you have some nailvarnish remover at home , this contains pretty much the same stuff (as long as its the cheapest nail varnish remover as the better ones have other chemicals in). But as I mentioned, this is really only a last resort.

Or would white spirit be a better thing to try out first... I'm no chemical genie, but I know that both remove paint like there is no tomorrow... so if one has slightly better odds of leaving my dash in one piece, I'd like to try that out first

White spirit should do the job too. Just put some small amount on a rag, and rub it into an inconspicous area to test it, leave it a while and rub more in to test.

If all goes according to plan, and the plastics dont go white / crack then put a small amount onto a rag, and rub it lightly in circular motions on the sticky. If it isnt coming off then add a bit more to the rag and try again. Otherwise get some humbrol paints from your local hobby shop and spray paint the whole dashboard!

If its quite sticky, 3M make a roller type thingy you can attach to a drill. They are mainly used by body shops to remove old trim tape and the like, but may be worth a go.

i previously posted about using nail varnish remover.

Its better to use assitone free nail varnish remover. More friendy to the dash.

Tonight I've actually used a little bit of white spirit on a hidden spot on the dash to test it and it seemed to stay fine... I then took the plunge and used a little bit on the sticky spot. Will find out tomorrow at daylight what the damage is :eek:

Regarding what some have said, please don't ever use acetone on plastic, as it damages a lot of different plastics, with various effcts from fogging to actually breaking the polymer structure so getting the melted effect.
