Fabia vRS sticking handbrake

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've had rear brake problems with my Fabia since it's 1st winter season. The outer 1" of swept are of the disc has rusted up very badly resulting in lots of grinding noise when braking at low speed. I went back to 2 different Skoda dealers and each pronounced the brakes are ok. Now after 21K miles the handbrake has slipped and the first 2" of lever travel is totally loose. The handbrake requires a hefty pull to hold the car on a slope, so it's back to the dealer again!

At my 20K service my dealer told me I need new disks and pads at 30K miles and that I'll have to pay, it's not warranty work. I thought I'd check out the cost of parts from vwspares and found out that there's a genuine "standard disc"and a genuine "anti-corrosion" disc available with GEOMET anti-corrosion coating.

Skoda Fabia Brake Discs - Skoda Fabia Brake Pads

Has anybody tried these discs? The original problem was with corrosion so I'm wondering if these discs will ease the problem.

Cheers,

Matt

I recently replaced my rear discs and pads for my fabia vrs.

I bought the parts from eurocarparts. I can't remember the exact manufacturer, but they were proper stuff. Less than £60 for both discs and pads.

If you wanted to fit them yourself, it's quite a doddle - I've posted a how to with pics and all... Only specialised tool you need is a caliper wind back one.

I changed my discs because the car failed its MoT and the discs were excessively pitted, so I guess after a few years, it does happen...

I had my pads changed (all round) at 33k..... dealer said I needed discs too, JBS said the standard discs are fine for two sets of pads, I'm now up to 60k on the original discs, and they are spot on :) (thanks JBS) (got to be heading for a new set of discs and pads soon though! 66k is my estimate)

I do high mileage though, and the brakes get worked all day, so no rusting, if you've had corrosion, the discs may need swopping!

if the discs are that rusty they will require replacement with the pads

also i've found on mine that one of the handbrake actuators on the rear caliper sticks , when it is pulled back to the off position this seems to allow the slack to be taken up in the handbrake by the self adjusting mechanism inside the caliper

That's exactly what I'm experiencing. I hope the dealer will sort this under warranty. The brakes feel a bit weak now too, it's upset the front to rear balance.

I'll replace the discs/pads after getting the handbrake sorted.

Thanks for your replies,
