Temperature Gauge Fluctuation

Featured Replies

Hi There,

My Temperature gauge Keeps fluctuating and the engine management light is on...it sometimes just stays in the in the cool end or it will go to mid temp as usual then drop back down again..What could it be.... I'd be most grateful for any advice

What engine have you got?

Could be a stuck, open, theromostat but this ought not to put your engine management light on. May be the temperature sender on the radiator giving false (hopefully) readings.

Have you checked your coolant level; OK? Any signs of leaks?

Certainly would check the fluid levels, and I'd get it checked out asap - it could be nothing serious but you don't want to end up with a messed up (overheated) engine.

Thermostat sure sounds like a great candidate though + low fluid level

Coolant temp sensor?

(I'm gonna plug my posts for all they're worth! One day they'll get listed on Google :D )

I had no engine management light showing, but noticed that the engine was taking an age to heat up. A couple of times the needle would flick up to normal and then back to cold again, but that would be it. Took the thermostat out and found it to be IN BITS (!) inside the plastic housing. It was just opening and closing when it please as nothing was really holding it in. Had to get a whole new part (plastic housing included) which cost £35. Could be a problem with older cars, like mine (1.4 MPi, X reg).
