Suspension Clonks

Featured Replies

Was driving along this morning, and had to brake fairly hard on a greasy road. The Anti-Lock did it's thing, and everything seemed to be OK, but then there was a pretty loud clonk from the front, sounded like drivers side, while still braking. Car seemed to be fine, but was clonking a bit later on over some speed bumps. I suspect suspension bushes worn, any other ideas, similar experiences? Car is Mk1 VRs combi with approx 38k on the clock. Ta

Arb/Arb bushes or drop links are a quite common possibility.

If it was a loud bang as opposed to just a clunk then there have been a few cases of suspension springs cracking on the car so have a look at that.

Thanks cheezemonkai, sounds like a trip to the garage is in order :(

Nope, you can see if you have a snapped spring quite easily just by looking at the thing and running your finger over the coil slowly (being carful for potential sharp bits).

As for ARB bushes and drop liks, if you turn the car to full lock these should be exposed. Try putting a little bit of fairy liquid on them and see if they get quiet again (this is only a temp fix mind).

Of course if your car is in warrenty, then go to the dealer :)
