Double stereo fitting?

Featured Replies

I've got a stock Blaupunkt CD player on my SLX, but I can't get long wave (here in France) to listen to the BBC on the way to work; (French radio's rubbish!) and I stripped a Kenwood cassette player that does get LW off my old GLX when it went to the breakers (bad move there).

So what I wanted to know is, is there a way to install both, so I've got the CD player and the LW radio? My dealer nearly killed himself laughing, but he doesn't know much. The mechanic - who is very good - didn't, but I don't want to pay his rates...

Is it possible to wire both into the same ISO block, and use one or the other?

Also, where does the black wire hanging off the signal amplifier in the aerial lead go?

The power would be no problem, you could just splice another ISO block into the existing wiring to power the second stereo. I'm not sure about the speaker wiring though, I think you might need to have some way of switching between the two stereo’s so that one unit doesn't fry the other. I could be wrong.

I was thinking of turning on only one at any one time - I can't figure out how to feed output from the Blaupunkt into the CD changer input on the Kenwood unit, which would be the alternative - are the inputs the red and white jack sockets on the back?

the red and white jacks are more than likely outputs rather than inputs, wouldn't it be easier to just get a new car stereo that has LW?

Money... I've got the two sets already, and I don't want to have to fork out another 100 quid or so for the sake of half an hour's fiddling round and a couple of lengths of wire. Seems I could spend the difference more interestingly!

Just wondering out loud here, but you may be able to reduce the output of the LW capable radio into a smaller signal (line level) and then feed it into the phone in of the other radio, if it has one. Then have a switch to toggle the 'phone' mode on/off.

Dunno if it is practical or not.

Other option would be to get a high(er) power switch to toggle over the speakers, but not all radios take too kindly to not having speakers connected when you have the volume up, worth a check :)

As long as you are only using one at a time, I cannot see that there would be too much of a problem. There will only be the drain of one unit at a time on power, and the same should apply to the speaker outputs.

tbh i just wouldn't do it, fitting 2 stereo's off of 1 lot of cables and speakers is begging to something to blow up/burn out. one way would be to have the front speakers on one stereo and the rear's powered from another or have two sets of speakers in teh car otherwise i'd say just get another stereo :)

That is the other option - feeding the sound from the CD player into the input for the CD changer on the cassette player. Thing is, I can't find the input! There should be one - it's of the right generation, and it has an 'aux' button on the front.

I've got a lot of older music on cassettes that I can't easily burn onto a CD, but which I also want to listen to - things like old Sight and Sound in Concerts, and so on.

I agree with bengi and would just get a new one that does both. I'm sure you can get if for a lot less than £100.

However what i guess you could do it have a lead that is single iso to two iso.

Install one below the other and then wire a relay or similar to cut the wires from one and connect the other for power & speakers when you press a button.

Seems a lot of hastle and a cludge and i think it would actually be cheaper to buy a new unit than do this properly.

You're probably right - seems a bit of a waste, though. And I can't transfer my cassettes onto CDs, either.

How about this for an option buy a new radio, then ebay your old ones?

How about a casette head unit with LW and a 6 disc cd changer?

unless bought 2nd hand the tape deck and changer is gonna be expensive i think.

how many cassettes do you have? I am sure the local TV/video shop over the road from me transfers various medias to CD/DVD..... Or have you not got a mate who could transfer it - or is it simply you have hundreds of tapes to transfer (and it would therefore take an age to do?
