Octavia Headunit/Speakers

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've had my 2003 octavia vrs estate a couple of weeks now and i love it. the only thing which is annoying me is the headunit/speakers.

Previously I had an Audi A4 and the standard kit in that was really good, however playing the same cd's in the octavia and it just can't produce any range of sound, the bass production is awful. I took it back to the dealer this week and they are going to replace one of the front speakers, however I am not convinced it will make much difference after reading some of the other posts on here.

I was after some advice on the best thing to do, I listen to and produce dance music so getting a good setup in the car is really important to me.

I read the post above about cutting a hole to produce a 'bass box', but it said that it is possible water can get in, is this worth it?

I do have an alpine 9835 headunit, which is a really nice unit (cost a few hundred couple of years ago) however the aerial lead got accidently pulled out the unit, so I need to find somewhere to fix it.

Will I get decent sound by replacing the front speakers or should I change headunit as well. I do have a kicker sub but with having an estate I don't know what a sub will sound like?

Cheers

Phil.

Phil,

I know exactly what you mean about the head unit and speakers. Even though I got my car from new, one of the door speakers and one of the rears was blown on the day of pick up.

Anyway, I have done the cutting of the door skin which helped a lot, as did replacing all four speakers with Pioneers units. I disconnected the rear tweeter and this improved things a little bit.

I'm keeping the standard head unit as I don't want to attract any attention from people who might want to take a nice shiny head unit, Skoda stamped on things seems to put people off.

I am thinking about one of these,

or one of these,

to improve the sound whilst remaining standard.

Fitting a powered sub seems to be the best option for me. Some people have had water ingress from cutting the door skin, but 9000 miles later I haven't had any problems.

Hope this helps a little bit,

Andrew.

I have replaced my head unit with a Pioneer 77MP3, JBL 12" sub with Alpine amp and have just fitted Infinity 6050cs front components which fit behind the original grilles. You have to use the metal adaptor plate that comes with them to space them out a bit and get some decent speaker wire and connectors to wire them up to the crossovers.

The difference in sound is phenomenal. I have also cut the door membranes and disconnected the rear tweeters as they are V harsh!

If you're serious about your music I'd replace the radio, front speakers and get a decent sub

Yeah, I'd agree. It's not that I'm not serious about music, it's just that my wife won't let me fill the boot with subs and amps. She seems to think that pushchairs and shopping are more important.

Ian's solution is the one I'd go for, but the version I mentioned is a compromise to maintain peace and harmony in our house.:o

Wasn't meant to detract from your post just a reply to philg stating that he produces dance music! :D:D
