crap head unit

Featured Replies

is it me or r the head units in the fabia vrs crap? i like my music

Don't be too unhappy, i imagine they're a great deal better than the one in a classic.

:(

Buy the pukka facia adapter plate from the dealers and replace the damn thing. I'll be putting my Kenwood MP3 player in mine. I couldn't go back to normal CD's....ever. Even a 6 disc changer is not enough. Only 6 albums without swapping discs??? Pah....rubbish.

I can fit about 8 albums on a CD on average in MP3 format at 196kbps and it sounds fine. The only thing is it's a little slower to read tracks and 'mount' the disc than normal audio CD's.

Yes the head unit is crap, solution is fit an aftermarket unit, not forgetting to fit an aerial amplifier. Something like this would sort it out....

Alpine CD Tuner (CDE9850Ri) for sale

If you think the Fabia one is cr*p, try the Octy Mk1, now that is truly awful. Octy Mk2 is better than Fabia Mk1 & Octy Mk2 based on what I've heard, not extensively listened to a Mk2 personally yet though.

It's all about speakers. Just mounted 2 6x9's on the rear shelf, with quick release connectors so taking shelf out is a doddle, wiring is simply transferred from original speakers in rear shelf voids. No impact on luggagge space. Sound is wonderful with standard symphony head unit.

When there is no one near enough to be annoyed, bass frequencies vibrate my lungs, and differences between a solid bass drum thump and a smooth sonorous fretless bass note can be clearly heard.

The waffle structured shelf is a pain to cut, but well worth the effort.

As mentioned the OEM speakers are rubbish. Simply changing those can make the standard headunit sound better.

The stereo in my Fabia sounds okay to me (Skoda badged Grundig radio cassette), its certainly better than the Cd player in the Colt CZT I test drove , that sounded horrible with no bass whatsoever , and I had it on full bass and 2/3rds of max treble , as I have my own system set up. Does the vRS have the 8 speaker set up that my car has?

hmm, question, should a 1.4 classic have rear speakers ? or just fronts ??

Whilst I don't think the Symphony h/u is the highest quality, the actual sound quality is quite good IMO.

I think I could do with winding off the amp gain and driving the pre-out harder, hopefully losing some noise and gaining a little character but I don't want to have to rip out the seat and/ot CD-changer.

Main gripe I have is the lack of meaningful EQ on it.

J.

the sound quality is fine i am also running a sub of mine and it sounds nice

I have got to admit the speakers and head unit is leagues above the ones in my 03 clio. I have never had a new unit put in other than the one standard so maybe in my experience it is good, other may be used to something better.

I'm kinda wondering about uprating my speakers - but I still wonder if I can be bothered, it's a fair bit of work :(

Only fronts , I'm afraid , i.e. s mids in the doors and 2 tweeters in the dash , you're missing the 2 extra tweeters in the rear doors and the 2 mids either side of the rear shelf.

You can get a 'rear speaker set' from the accessories catalogue , max output 50W , the part no is ABA 400 002 and its

Incidentally , has anyone fitted the uprated speaker sets from the Accessories book? There are two listed , only for the front speakers tho:

Front loudspeaker upgrade set max power output 80W

ABA 400 001-£80.50

Front tweeter set max power output 100W

ABA 400 003-£28.00

Just wondered if they were much good?

I wouldn't bother with the uprated Skoda speakers. You're better off spending the money on a decent 6.5" component set.

thanks for the info, will the wiring for them be there already ?!?

Haven't had a chance to look as the car is hardly ever here... :D

Sorry , I dont know if the wiring will be there on the Classic. Im sure someone on here has fitted rear speakers into one tho , maybe they will let you know?

Nope - no wiring for rear speakers in the classic's:(

was gonna fit rear speaker myself but looking at all of the hastle it would probably be worth going to the local car audio place and getting them to do all of the work for you!!! ;)

running a Sony CDX-GT300S through the standard front speakers on mine and if you turn the volume up the mirrors vibrate with the bass :D

The standard unit in mine was quite nice, asthetically pleasing and decent quality and features. However with the choice of cassette and radio I had to put in a aftermarket unit (now I have 2000+ tracks at the touch of a button - muhahaha). Must dash, Im off to get bits for the vent illumination mod :P

Edit: Mod finished!
