5th Gear - Merc 250D

Featured Replies

Just seen this weeks episode - the used veg oil car without any modifications.

He has been putting it in without any filtering and all thats been required is to change the Fuel filter.

This is so tempting - clearly paying the

paying fuel duty on waste chippy oil is ludicrus. they will start adding fines for people who take things from recycling centres next :thumbdwn:

They already have - there's a big sign up at my local "recycling centre" saying it's a prosecutable offence to interfere with or remove anything that's been dumped. So chances are you could end up with a fine for doing this...

Rob.

I'm toying with doing this- got a mate with a resteraunt that uses plenty of veg oil a week- just strain it into the tank on an old bit of french clutter like a 405d or 106d and voila

Just had a look on Auto trader and an R Reg 250D is up for £1250 what a great price.

Even if you use new oil and travel 10k per annum at say 45mpg the fuel would only cost you £456 rather than £911. Clearly using total waste oil well thats all free. You even get a bag of chips free too as the chippy doesn't waste money on disposal costs - all winners

what a joke :(

I wouldn't attempt this in a modern diesel engine, however in something 10 years old I'm sure you'd have very few problems. especially if you mixed the veg oil with diesel or a bit or Millers Diesel Plus...

I think that to remove the waste oil from the chippy (or anywhere really) you would have to be a registered waste carrier and provide Duty of Care forms with a disposal site / treatment centre on....

Its only

No you dont he just stopped by a chippy telling them he had ran out of fuel and he used veg oil. They supplied the goods no questions.

Id say the PD engine is very much up for the job of running on full 100% veg oil. And why not diesel was designed to run on peanut oil/any oil as it was for the developing countries.

Likewise the "Special" PD oil.....rubbish I put in Mobil 1 (diesel) from the first change and for the next 100k not a single problem and apparently in the following 20k since - Im told she is running very sweetly.

i wouldnt do this in a TDi maybe in an SDi though......

Nope it won't, it's too thick and the most you can run in an unmodified PD is about 40%. Unprocessed WVO is full of crap and unless it's been previously filtered to about 10 microns it will just block your filter. It is also going to be full of glycerin and water which it also won't like. Yes diesels will run on a lot of things but they usually won't run properly on them. That said it's your warranty.

There are numerous threads about Bio diesel. You pay 27p per litre tax which is half for normal mineral.

Search away.

XUD works nicely, just make sure you use some proper derv with a bit of millers diesel clean in it to keep the injectors and fuel pump happy :)

In colder times a derv/oil blend would probably work better as otherwise you would get nasty effects with the oil going solid.

Yeah, those units are not too fussy.

There are also plenty of heat exchanger kits out there too.

There are suitable diesel mercs in the trader for under £300. these things will happily do 200k on diesel so one would make a good daily drive if you have lots of miles to do and a good supply of alternative fuel.

Be warned the fule pumps on all diesel use the fule as a lub.

Veggy oil doesnt have that lubing quality.

Older cars that run very low injection pressures on a very lighly stress engine (merc) might get away with it for a while.

But modern diesel's maybe a Tdi would struggle as the injection pressure is high and the holes in the injecters small, thus problems would be expected.

But there are kits out there that allow you to run on a veggy mix.

Hope this helps.
