Dension Ice Link Plus - Octavia II

Featured Replies

Had a Dension Ice link plus with active cradle fitted to my 2006 Octavia yesterday.

Fitted by Halfords -

that looks like a good place to put it ray. i got one from the dealer when i picked my car up last week and ive run the cable to the jumbo box for now. if i get a cradle for it i may alos get a brodit mount and put mine by the gear stick.

let me know how you get on with the firmware as my mfd2 turned up today and im hopefully fitting it over the weekend.

Can't find the firmware anywhere ?

even if i do I don't have an iPod to update it - so will have to get my colleague to keep briinging his in.

I get the horrible feeling that the MFD2 does not support CDText so won't get ID3 Tag info. This is really only a problem if you have hidden the iPod away like I have.

When you are thinking of putting the iPod on the dash at least you can see what's being played at a glance.

MFD2 wise - have you got Maxi-dot ?

Have you ordered a new surround trim ?

it wouldnt surprise me if it doesnt supprt cdtext. i havent seen it mentioned anywhere else but i havent really searched it out.

ive got maxidot as its an L&K and i picked up the surround yesterday. Just have to get time today or tomorrow to install it then its on the hunt for a new teleatlas disk.

I got my TeleAtlas CD from satnavsystems - £123 including postage.

Make sure you get the one with the TMC Codes.

I think the new 2007/08 version is due soon, so may be worth waiting?

I am going to get the 07/08 as soon as its released and sell the 06/07 on eBay?

Superb, I don't understand why USA / UK Sites are completly different ?

Also i little odd that the firmware is not available on either site - surely if you have a registered product you should get access?

Ray, you're welcome.

That's pretty much the procedure. updatesThe files can be deleted after the update.

I think that "normally" there is an update menu item, but from memory I've always ended up doing manual. According to Dension, the full procedure when menu is not available:

Delete previous update files and reset iPod.

Copy the update package to iPod (cca 750 files).

Copy the Start_Update.mp3 onto iPod.

Disconnect iPod from PC.

Power on the car radio and change source to ice>Link (CD changer).

Select Browse/Genres/_config/Menu/Update/Start_Update song and play it on iPod.

While playing, insert iPod into the cradle or connect the dock cable; update process will start automatically.

After about 5 minutes, ice>Link will restart with the new firmware.

While displaying "Dont browse.." message you can check version number in the top right corner of the screen.

Unfortunately that appears fairly typical....

Perehaps their strap line should read - Dension for great product with no customer support

I have followed the instructions and cant get it to work. I am using a newer version of iTunes then the one pictured.

Whilst i have created a playlist "UPDATE" with all the files OK

When i play the start_update.mp3 file and dock the iPod in the car it plays for a while then jumps back to the previous playlist?

I have browsed to the playlist "UPDATE" and selected track 801 (eventually) and it does the same?

According to the instructions there should be a IceLink setup menu?

all i am getting is Language,Volume,Charge,Playlist

The iPod is a Colour 60gb but not the latest gen5 - probably gen4.

Until 25th December i am not going to have my own iPod, as it would probably help if he didn't have 60gb's of songs on it !

im going to try mine in a bit ray, my ipod is completely locked out when connected so i need to go down the playlist route too. will update when ive had a go.

i managed to get it working on mine by running the start_update.mp3 file as already mentioned by johnpritt. Doesnt make a blind bit of difference to how it works though and there is no cdtext on the mfd2 :( mine is an older 4th gen B&W version though

can you browse your ipod whilst it connects as i cant on mine

heres the instructions

Follow the steps below to update firmware when menu is not available:

# Delete previous update files and reset iPod.

# Copy the update package to iPod (cca 750 files).

# Copy the Start_Update.mp3 onto iPod.

# Disconnect iPod from PC.

# Power on the car radio and change source to ice>Link (CD changer).

# Select Browse/Genres/_config/Menu/Update/Start_Update song and play it on iPod.

# While playing, insert iPod into the cradle or connect the dock cable; update process will start automatically.

After about 5 minutes, ice>Link will restart with the new firmware.

# While displaying "Dont browse.." message you can check version number in the top right corner

of the screen.

I couldn't find /Genres/ menu item !

I'm not going to try it again now - I am really dissapointed that i can not get the ID3 tag to appear on the Nav screen, which means as the iPod is hidden in the storage box i don't know what song it is.

You could argue that any CD in the Factory CDChanger does not show Text then i have only gained the benefits of being able to store more than 6CD's worth.

Does anyone know if the 2006 'Stream' unit would display ID3 Tags ?

It's not the 'Stream MP3'

You can get direct control of the iPod - if you go to CD6 and then dip into the menu you can select control iPod directly.

Note: once 'okayed' you have to undock and redock the iPod.

not sure why you cant see the genres option on the ipod, maybe becuase its a later version? as long as youve manually copied over the Start_Update.mp3 file then if you can find it through any of the ipod menus and play it then it should start the upgrade. note that the Start_Update.mp3 has to be manually copied over as its not in the playlist.

not sure about the stream unit as i didnt try any cdtext cd's in it when it was fitted.

The Stream headunit in my new Octavia does read ID3 tags.

The navigation system is a little clunky (coming from having a super-sexy Dension DH-103), but it works - there is a "folder advance" and a "file advance" button, no tree display.

I`d change headunit as I don't want loads of CD's floating around my car, but I haven't yet seen anything which looks sexy enough for my liking. And I haven't figured out exactly what functionality I`d lose!

The first time I start the car, the iPod plays from the previous point, the display shows Track 1, Time 0:00

The time count up as expected, then the next track starts and it still displays Track 1? This continues to go in this display loop until i press Skip, then it will realise what track it should be and works correctly therein....

I have downloaded the Dension firmware again (v2.17) from TomTek.de and attempted the upgrade....

again, this does not appear to do anything apart from continually play either the Start_update.mp3 or the 805 files??

If i restart the iPod and Car ignition i get the Dension boot display which should show the firmware.....

It display v4.14 in the top right hand corner..... how comes the latest one is 2.17?

I thought the latest Dension Ice link displayed the Track info on the MDF2 unit. I

Checking the website again, the file 2.17 was released July 2006, so I cant believe my IceLink installed in November doesn't already have the latest firmware.

I have just downloaded the firmware again to read the readme.txt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ICEV2-2.17

Bug fixes:

- Starting problem fixed on Blaupunkt radios

- Keypress double executing fixed on VDO/Renault radios

- Strange track changes fixed on VDO/Renault radios

- Display freeze on CD change fixed on VDO radios

New features:

- Blaupunkt_Text carconfig added (displays text on capable Blaupunkt radios)

- VDO_NoText carconfig added (avoid CD changing on VDO radios that access CD-Text in a difficult way)

(displays text on capable Blaupunkt radios - i suspect this means the newer ones not the old MFD2 ?

Hi Ray or anyone who can help. I
