Cleaning K&N airfilter wihtout the kit??

Featured Replies

After a couple of sandstorms a few weeks ago, I feel I need to clean my K&N airfilter:rolleyes:

Thing is that it's a pain in the rear to order the cleaning kit from Dubai (nearest local place).

I have airfilter oil, is it a bad idea to clean and re-oil (sparingly) without the kit?

Has anyone here done it, if so how?

Thanks for any advice

Cheers

Bas

The oil for the green kits is quite plentiful. Its the cleaning fluid which is a lot more difficult to use in smaller quantities. I've found brake cleaner is a decently tough cleaning solution available in large quantities, and it's not aggressive as to damage the filter itslef. :) I would still follow the rinsing off, allowing to dry, and the oiling as per the usual instructions.

As pointed out in the linked thread above this is my method -

I use that Oxy stuff that SWMBO uses for the whites.

Use a suitable tray, lay the filter in it and cover the filter with a few scoops of said bubblies.

Pour on some boiling water and watch the dirt bubble out - lovely.

I used washing up liquid in warm water (in a cat litter tray) to clean mine. Is the oil you have K&N stuff? If not, I wouldn't use it personally :D
