Just had my 1.4 TDi 80 10,000 mile service done by Pilling Skoda in Milton Keynes. The invoice says that 4.4 litres of "Castrol SLX Long Tec" have been used. I've not come across that before - I presume it's suitable for the 1.4 PD engine?

First of all, VAG recommend Castrol to be use in all their engines.

Secondly, the Long Tec oil is the SLX III oil that they use in most VAG engines now. It is used in just about all, if not all, of their engines when they are set up for "Long Life" or "Variable" servicing regimes.

iirc its a fully synthetic oil where the old "PD" oil was only a semi synthetic.

So yeah, absolutely fine in your engine.

Castrol is one of the oils they recomend.

If you look at the VAG group Fuchs do most of the factory fill etc.

It does not matter which make of oil you use as long as it is to these Volkswagen specifications

505.01 (semi synthetic) 506.01 (full synthetic)

I can not imagine the Skoda main dealers putting the wrong oil in but I must admit I have not heard of "Castrol SLX Long Tec" being used in PD engines. It could be a good idea to check if the oil they have refilled with is one of the above specifications . Using any oil other than these could result in a very expensive engine rebuild or at the worst a new engine.

Worried now - the only data sheet I have found on the Internet for Castrol SLX Long Tec says that it is only 505.00. There is a Castrol SLX Long Life that meets the specs - I wonder if it is an error on the invoice? Better check with them when I take the service book in to be stamped today.

Castrol themselves recommend Edge Turbo Diesel 5w-40 oil for your car. The sump capacity is also only 4.2 litres so where did the other 0.2 go?!!

Went and spoke to them at lunch time. They did indeed use the SLX III fully synthetic oil but it always comes up on the computer as Longtec, apparently!

I dont want to seem a doom merchant but I should check whether you have the proper oil in or not thoroughly because I carnt see Castrol SLX111 on the list.

As they say it must have 505.01 or 506.01 on the can if it isnt it is definitely wrong
