225/40 x 16 tyre size?

Featured Replies

Has anyone run 225/40 x 16 on their standard rims?

What were your experiences please?

I can buy Proxes T1-R cheaper in this size than the standard 205/45

I know that this is not relevant to your question, but I thought I'd mention it anyway, just in case someone else reads this. I've got 215/55/16 on an Octavia with no rubbing problems at all. Looks good n'all.

do you mean 225 or 215?

I run 215/40's with no problems. Many other do as well. And yes they are about £15 a corner cheaper.

225/40s - that way the gearing is the same

Surely changing the depth changes the rolling radius therefore the speedo reads wrong?

Sounds a bit dodgy to me...

I've used 225/40s on 16s for the Fabia. Slows it down, but grip is better, and it looks real mean from the front and rear.

What the rim width of the standard vrs alloy?

225/40 would be the wrong rolling radius, as fobokavrs says, you'd want 215/40/16's, i run these too , and they are fine :)

After using the above tool it appears 224/40 are a better match to the stock 205/45. But will they fit on the standard rims? I think they would but not 100%.

Sonic - 225/40 has the same rolling radius as a 205/45

Mil - You noticed they slowed the car, there was really that much extra drag? What was stability like? I wondered if extra sidewall flex would have caused a small degree of wander? But you think there was noticeably more grip?

On standard wheels, I'd tend to say that 225mm is too wide. the standard Fabia VRS wheel is 6.5J or 6.5" wide at the tyre beads (165.1mm).

Ideally, the shoulder of the tyre should rise as vertically as possible from the bead for maximum support. I think 205mm is already getting towards too wide.

I tend to think a 195/50x16 with stiffer sidewalls may be the place to start. OTOH, get 17" wheels and put 215s on them.

Haven't researched tyre sizes/prices recently, so no idea if this makes financial sense or whether the load ratings are appropriate etc.

Just been on Toyo's site.

205/45 rim range is 6.5 -7.5.

215/40 rim range is 7.0 - 8.5

225/40 rim range is 7.5 - 9.0
