Anyone use/own a w850i?

Featured Replies

Looking at this SE phone as my next upgrade. Any thoughts?

I'd like some better software and text entry that my current Samsung E900, whilst still retaining a relatively small and light slide phone, that looks good. It's proving harder than I thought! :o

I'd like to retain at least a 2MP camera and flash, which my current E900 sports. I noticed today a guy at work has upgraded to the w850i - looks nice, not too heavy, but I didn't have chance to play with the software/text entry.

At the moment, it seems a toss up between this and the newer D900 Samsung...

Thoughts please!

Steve

I have a D900 which replaced my N80... and its the best phone I've ever had. So thats where my vote goes.

Saying that, I do like the 850... tough call mate.

It is tricky - very! Deep down, I'm Nokia through and through - nearly 10yrs of them. So when I get something non-Nokia, like this E900, it's not quite right. Customisation, text entry, profiles - those sorts of things. The E900 is only my second non-Nokia....

Problem is there's nothing that quite fits in the Nokia range at the moment. They're either all too big - like all the N-series or look rubbish and/or lacking in features

So the only other real alternative is S-E. Hmmm - might have a wander round town at lunch tomorrow then - see if any of the wonderful High Street phone shops actually have any working demo phones on hand. Here's hoping

I'm currently using a W810i. Started off on Nokia's (3210, 6210) then went Ericsson (T39m T630). Had a look round when I last got an upgrade 6 months ago. I'm not keen on the Samsung, LG etc interfaces. I have a pathalogical hatred of all Motorola's. So back to Nokia or what's now S-E. A couple of friends were using n70's. The interface is good, but they're just too big and the software was flaky. So I went for another Sony Ericsson - from a T630 to the W810i.

I like the interface, the 2meg camera is decent enough for snapshots and the Walkman software is perfectly fine. It doesn't sound quite as good as my iPod but then again I only need carry one item and it's also a radio too. T-Mob bundle Opera for Web'n'Walk duties, and it'll sync your calendar and contacts to a PC with Outlook. At one point I was carrying around an iPAQ and the iPod when I was at work, but I don't need them anymore. Battery life is decent enough at 5-7 days

It might be worth a look at Mobile-review.com . If you can get past the sometimes slightly iffy translations they usually show lots of detailed pics of the interface and sample camera shots.

Cheers for that - will take a look at the link.

Tom - will try and have a test of the D900 too...

Leave it on the shelf.

They suffer very high rates of LCD failures and not the kind that are covered under warranty. They seem very prone to cracked screen.

Nokia N73 isn't a bad handset.

Not good news :(

N73 was on my list but it's just too big and heavy.

Steve

I've had my D900 for several months and its been great. LCD failures? Maybe it appears they have a high rate of failures due to everyone having a D900?

Just get it insured anyway... *sigh*

Thinking about it - if the LCD does fail on it, how can it not be covered under warranty? :rubchin:

Just curious....

Steve

They crack, they seem really fragile worse than the Nokia 6280.

This isn't covered under warranty and there is a shortage of replacement parts

    The interface is great, lots better than the usual cack Samsung shove out but no they have major robustness issues.

Insurance is great, then you have to wait 3 weeks for the part....

Don't take out those dodgy car phone warehouse warranties :D :D :D :D :D :D :D (PS this is tongue in cheek btw)

I have got a SPV M3100 (way off topic), cracked the screen, got an orange care replacement the next day pre 9am, no questions asked.

I have got a D900 as well, it's unlocked and I use it when working abroad with local pay as you go sims, it's a good phone, my only criticism is the way it handles mp3's in it's daft album format.

I've got an w850i, corking phone, using sony's established UI which is very good imho.

Camera is pants. No autofocus means it's very easy to get quick shots, but i haven't got a pic that i'm happy with yet.

Other than the camera i would highly recommend this phone :) No rubbish joystick thing to go wrong either!

If you have any specific Q's about it i'll keep an eye on this thread

MPM :D

Just for the record, if you see the thread in the Hotel, you'll note that Orange and Nokia have admitted that all N series phones are having problems and they have no solutions.

w950i looks far better, not much point in the crap camera on the 850i anyway, it just seems like a cheap phone, not as good as the k800i. I also thought about the d900 but my mum has the d600 and thats carp so didnt want to risk it.

N73 arrives on saturday!

My sister's got the W850i. Ive played on it for a while and I still prefer my older W900i...

Might be something to do with the resolution but the screen didnt seem as good quality, the camera wasnt that good and the buttons were a bit tricky to press.

HTH :P

Just looking at the specs on the 900i Dave - as nice as it is, it's 150g

That's nearly two of my current E900

Needs to be around 100g I reckon.

Steve

Yes its a brick  Not a bad looking brick imo but heavy and too big for some jeans pockets!

Ive got 6 months left with it and it has been bloody good - ie being dropped loads of times on tarmac and still working/swivelling. Definately sticking with SE in the future

The W850i didnt seem as well made, BUT it is still a good phone. Its more compact/stylish/up to date. Have you managed to mess with one yet?

'Tis tomorrow's job. Lunchtime spent trawling phone shops - oh joy :D

Steve

the D900 is very nice... very small for what it does..

as yourself im a nokia fanboy, and am still using a 6230i the 6233 is its "sucessor"

with SE phones, it depends what you want.. the W series is for walkman, but if your not really going to use it for music, look at the K-series phones.. a mate of mine has a K800 and i have to admit its pretty sweet

I looked at the W850i but opted for the 810i The camera is great you get good stills and the video is good too. The MP3 player is mint, the UI is simple and the clarity of calls are excellent.
