Skoda not as reliable as I thought

Featured Replies

Found this list from What Car over on uk-mkivs.net. Shows how poor VAG Group cars are proving in reliability. Just when I was thinking of changing from VW to Skoda aswell.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking too. My dad used to have a Xantia Turbo D as a company car years ago and it was never out the garage getting something fixed.

I think someone is playing around with the figures. I mean the three French manufacturers, Rover and the fourth French company Nissan (who used to make the best and most under rated over engineered cars before Renaualt got involved) in front of Skoda, hhmmmm.... don't think so. JD Powers can't be so out of synch with everyone else can they?

It can be dangerous to quote figures out of context.

Here is the full report.....clicky

Its based on cars that are covered by Warranty Direct, so predominantly ones that are over 3 yrs old I guess. Perhaps that is why the results differ from other surveys

I prefer this quote from the 2006 JD Power results

Skoda Continues Its Success In The What Car? J. D.

Power SurveyPublished: June 2006

Skoda continues to excel in providing its owners with excellent customer service, as it is ranked third overall in the 2006 What Car? J. D. Power Survey of Customer Satisfaction. Ranked in the Top Five for the 11th consecutive year, Skoda is the highest-ranked European brand in the survey.

With a total score of 842, Skoda is ranked much higher than the average of European manufacturers. By model, the Skoda Fabia is ranked third among superminis while the mid-sized Octavia is ranked second among lower medium models. Skoda’s third model line, the upper medium Superb, is not included in the survey as the sample size was too small.

Skoda was rated first among manufacturers in the Ownership Costs portion of the survey, which was completed by over 89,000 UK car owners. In the other areas of the survey, Skoda ranked sixth in Service Satisfaction, fifth in Quality and Reliability, and seventh in Vehicle Appeal.

Skoda UK Director Chris Craft commented, “We’re very pleased that our customers continue to be satisfied with their cars, the great value that they receive when they buy a Skoda and the service they receive when they need it. The J. D. Power Survey, along with other customer satisfaction surveys, tells the story about the most important part of our work - the great relationships that our retailers deliver to Skoda customers.”

plus i think in genral these surveys are bull****... based on the customers perception of the brand at that time... and because perceptions are always changing (especially skodas) it will affect results, even if the actual reliability of their cars havent changed.

I would say that the table is not far off where I'd put VW. I've owned 5 VW's from a B reg Polo Derby to my current 99 Gora and I can say as they have got newer they've got worse. Although when it runs like it should I love it.

Those figures made me laugh, PSA cars above anything??? What a joke - even a Citroen dealer once told me he wouldn't consider one out of warranty!

Go back onto what car? and have a look at the reader reviews, four and five stars from 99% of reviewers, that list you posted is ********

The average age of cars in our survey was 4.9 years, and the average repair cost was £309.

Thats why it looks odd!!

Calm down mate. Only posting whats been published. My dad has owned 2 Octavias and loved them in every way from the cars to dealer experiences, and I'm not here to slate VAG cars, especially as I've owned so many. The table was produced from warranty statistics, not a survey like the JD Power one.

Ford in 10th?! Pah! They should be above Vauxhall!!:rofl::rofl:

I'd agree with the positioning of Skoda though from my own 3-4 year old car's experiences :D

Chris

thought Ford normally ranked about 139 th with the emphasis on Rank

I've had almost exclusively VAG cars since about 1991, and they are far better than the few alternatives I've had. Between me and SWMBO:

1981 Golf C

1982 Scirocco GTI

1985 Scirocco GT

1987 Volvo 480 ES (****e, rusty, unreliable)

1984 Polo C

1996 Mini (fun but unreliable & rusty)

1988 Golf Driver

1998 Seat Ibiza TDi

2001 Polo Tdi

1999 Audi A3 TDi

2000 Lupo 16v Sport

2005 Fabia VRS

In all honesty, the best reliabilty/price/performance was probably the Golf, but I think the oft-quoted 'VAG cars are getting worse' is a fallacy. The A3 was fantastic, but pricey. The Polo TDI was good too. but we didn't pay for it. The lat 2 cars are what we drive now.

Seriously, the only cars we've had major trouble with have been non-VAG, and if I've ever driven a non-VAG courtesy car, I've been dissapointed.

There's two types of survey, those based on facts and those based on opinion and 'ownership experiences'.

The latter, like JD Power are not scientific, they are subjective.

The former, such as those from car lease companies are more factual.

The Skoda results are generally very good for 'ownership experience', but very average in the actual real number of faults per car (from rectification stats etc).

The difference between the 2, I found personally to be due to the good price, and the small number of good dealers giving a warm and fuzzy ownership experience. However as VAG UK are convinced about getting rid of the good dealers for the nobs in the shiny metal and glass palaces who don't actually give a damn...well, I think what's going to happen here over the next few years.

Yep spot on! Look what happened to Subaru after they topped the JD Power Survey for years and years and Subaru UK decided to dictate that all the small friendly dealers got put out of business!

Chris

even if it is low we still love the skodas :)
