Help! My battery was dead this morning

Featured Replies

Yep, that's the long and short of it. Got to my car this morning the LED for the Clifford Alarm was completely off (should be flashing) the Alarm key forb was completely useless as was the spare. Had to open the car via the key (haven't done that in ages!). Got my friend to give me a 'jump leads' start at 7am (yep, he's a good mate). Got the leads connected the Alarm went off (I'll have some really upset neighbours) then hey presto it started and everything was cool. Got to work it seems fine I will check it later.

Any ideas... I'm sure everything was off...should I get a new battery or what?

By the way its a Legacy Turbo (I know its not a Skoda but u guys are really helpful and I plan to get a Octavia 1.8T once I've saved my pennies).

Thanks

The car also seems to be running much better is that anything to do with the ECU and using Optimax and Millers Octane booster. It does have a 'Superchip'.

Any comments...

Thanks

Aaquil.

Good morning Aaquil,

I would drive it around for a bit (about 15-20 miles with the accessories off) and then, being a defenceless woman, take it to a garage and get them to check the charge of the battery with those pincer type things. I'd then go shopping :D Once I'd finished I'd take it to the nearest garage and get it checked again to see if it is holding its charge. If it isn't, I'd pop down to either Halfords or a motor factors and buy a new battery. Hey, I'd even get them to fit it for free and I'd have a nicely warrantied new one.

If, of course after the first run it hardly has any charge it could be the alternator thingy is stuffed.

Hope that helps.

Thanks mate...kinda silly question wasn't it. I suppose if you ask a silly question you get... I'm gonna get my friendly friend mechanic to have a look.

Went to 'Car craft' Friday night not only did they take ages to fit a new 'heavy duty' battery but they connected it incorrectly positive lead to the negative terminal!!! Blew the main fusable wire (luckily) and mashed up my hands free kit. They had to due a bodge job with the wire until I get one from Subaru (Wednesday). Also, my radio station settings keep resetting themselves when I turn the car off (does that make sense) so I have to keep on retuning them!!! What has happened there any ideas?

I phoned them up when I got home telling them about the hands free kit and they said they will get their electrician to look at it when I take it in on Wed (can't wait for that one). I though red mean't positive and black meant negative?!!!! Bloody Nora

A very upset Aaquil.

Was the mechanic colour blind by any chance? Thats the only reason i can think for putting the wires on the wrong way round, :shakehead

There will be a constant feed to the radio which may have fused. Have a look through the fusebox, alternatively there may be an "inline" fuse in the wiring at the back of the radio.

Aaquil,

Re: your radio presets.

Take a look behind your head unit, if there's a fuse in the permanent 12V supply line, i reckon they've blown it. Failing that, whatever fuse supplies the H/U may also have blown.

I'm amazed anyone could get the polarity wrong on a car battery, it's hardly brain surgery after all.

Denis,

"Mark all of the battery cables so you will know how to reconnect to proper battery post or terminal and check the cables and cable terminals closely for damage. A loose terminal connection, bad crimp or cut cable will cause a high resistance and a large voltage drop when high current is running though it. If the cables are reversed, you can do extensive damage to your electrical system."

As quoted from the website...thanks for the website I now feel even better (gun to my head better that is!!!). I will be going back on Wednesday and getting the radio, handsfree kit etc. sorted or there's gonna be trouble...and guess what?

My back tyres got a nice dirty, big nail in it last night...I came out this morning with a falt tyres. Just spent the best part of

And I'm getting a squeaky noise constantly from either the front or rear passenger wheels when moving which gets louder the faster I go...what's that then?... is my wheel just gonna drop off!!!

Soon to be absolutely skint Aaquil :pants: :pants: :pants: :pants: :pants: and :pants:

squeaky noise constantly from either the front or rear passenger wheels when moving which gets louder the faster I go...what's that then?.

Simple cure, remove wife/partner from car :D

rofl, i THINK that's not what he meant ;)

damn Aaquil you really are unlucky these days, hope the shop fixes everything for free, if not you should sue them (or make them sign a paper that they've turned the cables wrong or something).

Best of luck (you obviously need it!)

Here is my 10p worth,

In regards to your car going better. The cold weather today and what we are likely to get is great for cars specially turbos.

Cold air = more dense air. More dense air = more air in the engine.

Like having a supercharger!

Thanks for the replies...I can certainly relate to the wife comment but its not the only noise. It is certainly something coming from the car.

Going Wednesday I will let u know what happens.

Apparently, the noise is not a problem?!!! Squeel from the brakes. Mintex pads are renowned for it apparently and had some fitted not that long ago. some local Mechanic friends check it out and found nothing wrong related to the wheels. BUT they found that the mounting for the stainless steel exhaust were split on one side ...Bloody Nora!

Anway went back to 'Carcraft' they fixed the hands free kit but the radio they said the tune in channels that untune themselves when the engine is turned off is because I have not pre-set them. They will become unset if not pre-set when battery is changed. Thats strange that last time my mechanic friends replaced my battery that didn't happen...weird eh?!!! Anyway, he did a demo turned the ignition off and hey presto no loss of channel (okay I'm a plonker then). No actually, I'm not a plonker as this morning same problem again.

Give me a mallet to use on my car or myself :pants: :pants: :pants: :pants: :pants: :pants: :pants: and :pants: and a few more.

Aaquil

When I transferred the stereo from my old car to my Octy the preset station memory was lost everytime I turned the car off. This was caused by VAG using a non standard wiring connection and was fixed by swapping 2 wires around. This suggests to me that perhaps the wire that maintains a constant current from the battery to the stereo has been damaged (or perhaps a fuse). Take it back to the shop and insist they fix it.
