4X4 Elegance 1.8T Advice

Featured Replies

My son has tested a 2002 car with 43K on clock (from Broxburn, Edinburgh Dealer)

I am concerned at a noise/vibration from the rear on take off when turning. I suspected a fault with the rear diff. Their mechanic says it is a feature of the car. My past experience with an Audi A6 Quattro had no such noises.

Should he walk away or is this normal?

Thanks

Hi there, are you sure it's not a wheel bearing noise? I have a noisy rear diff (well my car does) so can tell you all about that but you only really hear that at higher speed, and in my case not when taking off or any worse when turning.

Hi, hope this helps

the A6 runs a full Quattro system, Octy 4X4 runs a Haldex system, ( only sends power to the rear when sensors detect front wheels slipping/losing traction).

If it is a creaking sort of sound it could be the anti rollbar bushes need relacing, not an uncommon fault iirc.:)

but wait & see what other, better qualified people think. (Stuart J might be of help)

Hope you get the answers you need.

Thanks

noise is only apparent at low speeds when turning e.g/ taking off onto a T junction.

So system is more like my fathers Landrover Freelander.

My 4x4 makes no such noise and I can't imagine how it's normal.

Sorry :( and welcome :)

If you are not 100% happy then I would walk away and find another example.

If he is set on the car get an RAC or AA inspection on it and specifically ask that the 4x4 whine is checked.

Mine's an 01 Elegance 42k 4x4...no noise at all.

mines never done it but i'd say it has nothing to do with the 4x4 side of thigns if its only apparent when turning at low speed.

have you checked that the tyres aren't catching on something in the arch? the liner maybe?

Great advice that, get it checked or walk away. Normal is no noise.

No such noise from the rear of my 4X4 either. I would walk away from that one.

If the reg begins MK51*** .... would recommend a check before parting with readies :P

come on explain ?

No rear noise from ours either.

Reg begins SK02....

Noise is not a whine or rubbing more a low pitched vibration. It is apparent accelerating at low speed when turning near to lock - I would suspect when significant diffence in speeds of rotation between nearside and offside wheels. Though is not apparent when driving at constant speed!

My son looked at the car with a mechanic friend - though he was not familiar with the Octavia 4x4.

I have suggested he drives another car to ascertain if it is similar.

Thanks all
