Help required-Surround sound question

Featured Replies

Im getting Sky HD tomorrow and it says to compliment the HD picture I should invest in a decent sound system

After reading several reviews, I have settled on the Philips HTS9800W

What I wanted to know is will my Sky HD play through the system or does it only work when playing DVD's?

Also my plasma only has 1 HDMI connection, which will be taken by Sky HD, so I wont be able to use the HDMI port for the upscaling DVD player (which is a shame as the reviews say the picture is pretty good through the HDMI) Do I use a DVi or component connection?

I have just been emailed by the place I ordered the Philips HTS9800W from, that they are out of stock, so would I be better off buying a surround amp and some speakers, than the all in one package option?

Hope some clever techie can help me out please

regards

Damian

The picture quality on DVI is basically identical to HDMI so use that for your DVD player.

The Philips you mentioned looks nice but I'd always prefer a proper dedicated amp.

Oh , and the Sky+ has an optical digital output as well as conventional phono plugs so you can connect that to whatever sound system you buy

I went down the dedicated amp route about 18 months ago now... and i've not looked back since :)

It does cost more and can be more involving to setup but extra flexibility it gives you and the end the results are worth it IMO :)

Thanks for the help guys

Im going to stick with the philips, until I get more into it, then may upgrade later

I have just got into surround sound, and purchased a Yamaha AV Pack59, which is basically a proper separates AV Amp and speakers package. Cost was just over £200, has 2 digital optical inputs and 1 x digital coax, RDS tuner with full eon functions, and loads of normal analogue inputs. Only thing is you will need a separate dvd player.

This is the one I got.
