14 or 15

Featured Replies

Has any with a 1.4 mpi tried 15 inch alloys on the car, just as I didnt no how different the handeling would be and if the speed/ pulling power was taken out of the car

I've got 16" vRS alloys on my 1.4mpi and started with (vRS) standard 205/45 16 tyres that stretch the gearing a bit. This did seem to blunt the the performance a touch, particularly on the Motorway. I therefore re-tyred with 195/45 16s Michelin Pilot Exalto 2 (expensive but fantastic) the size of which matches the 185/60 14 originals a lot better and the zing in the performance returned. Handling is noticably improved and certainly there is more grip.

If you're looking at 15" wheels; the 195/50 15 as fitted to the Elegance, or as an option, are a good (the right) match for size and thus should not make any noticable difference to performance but will give a degree of improvement to handling.

I have, as an experiment, reverted to standard 14" wheels/tyres for a couple of weeks recently but very quickly decided to get back to the 16" alloys.

A noticable fact is that my 16" alloys with 195/45 tyres are 2.5kg HEAVIER per wheel compared to OE 14" steel wheels with 185/60 tyres!!!
