When to change brake discs?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry if this is a clueless newbie question, but I've had a quick search around and can't find any hints.

The car has just come back from the dealers for its service, and they have commented that the brake pads have about 5k left on them, and that the discs 'may need changing at the same time'.

I've had a look at them, and there is clearly a lip but I'm not sure how to tell whether they do indeed need replacing or if the dealer is angling for a bit of extra work. I've no intention of letting them do it, anyway - I'm planning either to DIY or source the parts and get a local place to fit them.

I'd be grateful for any pointers.

Thanks in advance,

James

The're most probally right on both counts, can't comment on your pads but discs' do need changing from time to time.

Do it your self mate, piece of p**s. Have a look around at after market Discs' there are some "Corkers" out there.

Try Demon Tweeks to see what's available, not saying buy them there, but do have a look.

There's a minimum thickness specified by the manufacturer for brake disks, if you post ur engine details i'll have a look for u,

Its then just a case of measuring the disk thickness - a good diy way is with a pair of mole grips (set them so they just clamp down on the disk, then release, close them down off the disk and measure the gap) not 100% acurate but...

It's worth remembering that if you change the disks you have to put new pads on too.

As Wayne said its p**s easy to change em

I've never been happy after fitting new pads to old discs-they never seem to bed in properly! Like above easy to fit and not really that expensive, just paid £55 with delivery for a complete rear set (pads/discs) off ebay! Mintex as well so a quality item! Dunx

Just raised this query for my 2003 Octavia (with intention of trying for new disks and pads from seller) and local garage used their PC-based system to confirm minimum thickness was 19mm and a micrometer to confirm mine were at 21mm. Being an independent they charged me nowt for this and use of hoist to look under car. Dropped a
