Electrical Question

Featured Replies

I have a RC Glow plug that needs a charger, the battery is a Ni-Cd 1.2V SC 1600mAH. A friend was saying to make up a charger for it. I was going to take an old 3,7V 355mA Nokia Charger, put in an LED (he says that uses about 1.5V) and put in a Resistor and that should be okay.

So what size Resistor do you reackon I need. Does it all sound okay ?

the current of the charger does not matter as when the battery is fully charged it will no longer draw current so since you have a 1.6Ah battery it will just charge at 355mA until charged (about 4.5Hr) so what you want to do is ignore the LED and just conect a 10 Ohm resistor (if the psu gives out 3.7V) in series with the battery to charge it however make sure the voltage accross the battery is about 1.2 to 1.3V before connecting.

I am an electrical engineer that specialises in 110V-415V chargers and i would not recomend you do it as you are more than likely to over charge your glow plug and make it go bang = not good, you would be best to go and buy a new one or go into argos and buy a variable power supply with the little nob you adjust so you can change the voltage. if you still want to go down the route of the home made one ill send you a drawing of how to do it if you want.

 PM sent ;)

i could sell you a complete unit with a meter on the glowplug igniter to tell you if the glowplug is dead and a 2400maH battery in it for £14.99 if u want :)

If you use a resistor in series to drop the voltage be sure to use a 1 watt version. A standard 1/4 watt one would get smoked.

ok email sent let me know how it goes

Have you any chargers on their own ? I already have a glowplug.

Btw Any recommendations on batteries needed for the Serpent Starter Box. Spec/Price

if you want i could order you a charger. Also the starter boxes really work the best when run from a 12v source ie a car or motorcycle battery but just make sue you box can handle this. also some boxes will have a space inside for a motorcycle type 12v battery inside them.

What kinda of price are they ? also + P&P

The one I got looks like this one, Serpent Model Racing Cars - Product - Powerstart Starterbox Grey

i will check the charger and let u know. Also you can only use 7.2v batteries and with the highest mAh you can get. I have some 3400mAh ones which would do but i only have to left and they are 23.99 reduced from 40 so they are a really good price

Are they each in a Pack ? (not sure of the correct term, you know like these type Premium Power 7.4V 3300MAH 20c+ [PREM-P-BC3300T2S] - $44.00USD RC-Mushroom, Your One Stop RC Pro Shop)

or have you a picture.

Do you have chargers for them ? I suppose I'd have to get cabling to connect from the Batteries to the starter box, or would they connect directly.

the batteries that you have picked are lipoly batteries and wouldnt do. the batteries u need are 7.2v batteries and come with a tamiya connector attached which will plug directly onto your box. You will need a charger and a slow one is 6.99 and will take overnight to charge and you obviousily need to do both so ether it will take 2 days to charge both or else you could buy 2 chargers. another option is to buy a fast charger which could charge these batteries and also the reciever battery pack and the ones in your controller and will takefrom 25-30 mins or so. This type of charger cost £55 and it is a really good investment as you will find loads of uses 4 it. Also you can charge your glowstarter with it too with the right leads :)
