Second Hand Fabia

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have just put a deposit down for a 2001 Y reg Skoda Fabia 1.4 Classic. 55k on clock.

When I took the car for a test drive, when idle, the engine was running lumpy / misfiring sporadically.

The mechanic replaced the spark plugs in front of me which made no difference.

They said to leave with them.

They have replaced the coil pack, cleaned the fuel injectors and replaced the air filter.

They then took it out for a 'good run'.

They say now that it is running fine.

Obviously I will be checking this when I pick up at weekend, is there anything else I should be checking for?

Thanks

How much did you pay?

I'd be asking if the piston rings have been done by skoda on a 1.4.

Other people will know more than me and a search will probably reveal more too, however i am fairly sure that somebody mentioned there was an issue with some 1.4's not lasting long due to piston rings failing giving rough running.

Is'nt the piston ring failure 'common' only on the 1.4 16V? If it is a Classic it is more likely to be a 1.4MPi like mine.

Don't know, but then the 8v has head gasket problems doesn't it?

I don't know enough about the 1.4, i just remember hearing it on here.

It is a 1.4MPi - should I be worried?

Hello Ian

The 8v 1.4 has reported to have head gasket problems, a bit like my Punto, that was 8v too and suffered a head gasket failure

Yeah , the 1.4 8V is prone to head gasket probs , whip the oil cap off and have a look on the underside , if there is a creamy brown gunge clogging it , and the water in the expansion bottle is a browny colour (it should be nice and pink) then the car has a problem , and will cost around

Well I took the plunge and bought it.

Drove it home and took the good long route - gave it a good testing and seem sto run fine.

Still a slight amount of hesitation when idle. Revs fluctuae between 800 - 1000 revs - not sure what this could be - any ideas?

I managed to get a 2 year warranty out of the garage so should be ok.

They replaced sparks, coil pack, cleaned fuel injectors and replaced air filter - passed MOT first time - no probs with emissions test.

A 2 year warranty... , you did very very well to get such a long warranty.

Could be throttle body - went on son's Polo (commonish fault on older VWs), dealer wanted

Good luck with it!
