Featured Replies

as the title says i'm looking to upgrade my 939 processor

i've got a 3500 in at the moment

i'm thinking dual dore or a second hand fx 55/56/57

opinions please

ps i got a asus an8 deluxe which i belive is compatable with 939 processor

Save your money and leave it where it is.

Put the cash towards a new mobo/CPU when you have time/need.

err.... what's a 939 when it's at home??

Socket 939, is for the AMD Athlon. The 939 has now been superseeded by the Socket AM2. I have been trying to find a socket 939 X2 4800 for quiet sometime now, the only place to get 939 cpus now seems to be secondhand on ebay and they go for silly prices.

i have a 3800x2 that clocks to 2.25ghz per core - great chip. am thinking of upgrading though. open to offers.

oh right.. i think that's what i've got inside my computer box thing....

i need a new pc tho, one of the ide ports on the motherboard has stopped working

Nah, plenty of us with single core S939 want to upgrade to dual core. Having just yesterday done some video conversion I am looking for a dual core chip myself because my PC was effectively frozen for 7 hours

Core 2 Duo would be nice but needs new motherboard and RAM, too much of an investment because S939 is not so old.

@fatty, the dual core 4200+ is apparently the one to go for, the ones with double the cache are overpriced and don't really perform any better. But if you can find one anywhere then I've got dibs on it :D

Bear in mind though that dual core has no impact on gaming performance so if it's that you are after, buy a new graphics card. Even if you only bought one last week :D .

yeah the 4200 x2 seems to be the one from what i have read

i have been looking at fx's on e bay they seem to go for under £200

i was thinking along this line as it's gaming i have in mind dual core will have no real benifet for me.

This upgrade ill just be a stop gap quickie as i don't want spend on mobo and ram cos the board i got is good and i got 2gb of ram on it now and to go replace all that will be a grand

the gear i have now is only 18 mths old and i'll be f****d if i'm getting rid of it all this soon

new gfx card is already in the pipeline anyway just as soon as 7950gtx's drop price again

£200 FX will still get it's but kicked by a mid to low core2 duo and £300 will buy you a good system

I wouldn't bother with upgrading on S939.

I have a 3500 DC and I think it's running at 2.5GHz so not doing too badly.

Why do you want to change? What's requiring the upgrade? What are the other bits in your system.

IMHO, it's not worth spending megabucks on a big S939 because cheezym's right: if you're going to spend round £300, better off spending that on a new platform, whether AMD AM2 or Intel Core 2 Duo, you'll need DDR2 RAM.....

my spec is

amd 3500 64bit cpu

2 gig ddr 400

2x 6600gt (bought in a moment of madness)

500 watt psu

x-fi sound card

an8 sli deluxe mobo

120 gig hdd

40 gig hdd

if i wanna upgrade to a new board and processor i need to spend a lot ram will be nearly £200

processor £200 board will be £150 and gfx card nearly £250

all that when i can just throw in a fx 55/56/57/ for around £200

what say you on the matter TF

Personally I would say that you would be wasting money buying a 939 processor as they command too high a price for the performace they give, especially the FX versions.

If you change your CPU you would want top replace the 6600GT's next as they would be a very weak component in the system, then the two HDD's which are quite small and slow, and probably the 40GB is over 3 years old so not one you would want to trust with critical data.

I'd not saying buy a core 2, (only reason i said core 2 was this is best bang per buck at the moment) or even a new AMD.

What i am saying is that you would be better off sitting tight on what you have until you can afford a new system. March is a great time to buy, and you could probably flog all those bits for a reasonable amount of cash.

I mean if you look at it, even if you managed to spend £650 on those three parts, you would be spending £450 to do the same in the current system (assuming you updated the GFX card at some point as theose two 6600GT's will work in a new system ;) ). This system would still be far slower than the new one, so put the cash to one side and start saving.

I have got a 4800 Dual Core about to go on e-blag ......... could lessen the cost of an upgrade :D

Got board / ram / projector / sata drives / 7950gx2 (2 of) roll up roll up :D :D :D :D

Fluff give me a p.m with price's mate bagsy first dibs on the gfx card

Well I would say I'm interested in the CPU but having just had a look at the prices they go for on flea-bay you'd be much better off putting it on there  .

I'll hang on until places start stocking 4200 again (AMD haven't actually discontinued them yet as far as I know?), or just give up and go Core 2 Duo when I can't bear it any more.
