Accessing files on a Windows PC from a Mac Mini...

Featured Replies

...and vice versa.

Is it possible? I've very little knowledge of Macs, but my mate's just got a Mini (Intel Duo Core model) for Christmas. Have them both on the home network. I only tried accessing the Mac from Windows earlier, not the other way round.

Just got a 'network resource could not be found'. The Windows box can 'see' the Mac Mini (i.e. I can ping and get a timely response).

Or is it just a no-go, due to differing file systems? Just need to move some files around really...

Thanks,

Steve

As it's basically a Unix platform, you could FTP from the Windows machine?

I've only ever done Mac -> Windows though, so not sure if there is a better way of doing it...

OK, yep - could FTP it.

Samba share - is this something setup on the Mac box? (will read up on it later, but just so I know!)

Cheers,

Steve

Think so as it's available for linux, bsd etc.

The mac Might call it windows share, samba or SMB.

This will really interest you though as it appears to be something released for windows too :)

Apple - Mac OS X - Bonjour

OSX has samba already installed...

You can share files just the same as as you would between 2 windows machines without having to install any extra software

There is your answer then, any instructions on how to turn it on as it will be off by default (is on the PPC version on our mini anyway and I am up to my eyeballs at the mo)

its easy.

System prefs > Sharing > Services > Tick windows file sharing

After that it will ask you for your account password to enable your account then just connect to your mac mini from the windows box with the IP it tells you.

Job done

Sorry for the lack of details.. i was at work..

Anyway here goes.. in the system preferences, sharing you will need to enable windows sharing click the accounts button and select which account you want to be able to access, and if you have the firewall on then you will need to make sure the service has a tick on the firewall tab.

I think that should do it... :)
