i'm in the market for a used car and saw a 2002 fabia 1.9tdi comfort. full service history and mot till july. haven't heard it running yet but looks in good nick.

only thing is it has around 100,000 miles on the clock. dealer has it listed as

Mileage isn't really a risk for the engine, but other things will start to wear. Also remember 120k is a cambelt service which is a biggie

ignore the mileage, but make sure they change the cambelt before you buy it.... seems like a reasonable price too

Looks OK & hundreds cheaper than any others listed.

Screw them for everything you can e.g. warranty (not that some are worth the paper they're written on - with all the exclusions), possibly the cambelt change, AND then do the deal.

What would be the rough cost of a cambelt service in case I can wrangle a discount out of them if they won't change it themselves?

Cambelt service at dealers (120k so well off yet) would be circa £400.

Best quote I got for a 60k service (cambelt) was

Price seems OK for the year but that's high mileage to my mind. Recently saw a 53 plate TDi comfort with air-con and fogs for 3495.

I don't think that you'll necessarily have a problem mechanically but would have thought that the resale value would plummet.

As was pointed out, there's nothing close to it on price in Autotrader at the moment but perhaps worth waiting for a lower mileage example?

Have you done a Parkers or HPi price check and adjusted it for the mileage? 100k is over twice average which I think is calculated at (a very conservative) 8000 miles.

I would look else where to try and get a car with a lower mileage, or try and get another £500 off the price. 100,000 miles is not a lot for a diesel engine, but other mechnical bits will be wearing out soon... You'll also find that most warranties don't offer much in the way of cover when a car passes 100,000 miles (hence why they drop in price).
