Had a massive deep stone chip on my bonnet, decided to use the tried and tested technique of putting a huge blob of touch up paint over it, waiting 15 minutes for it to dry a bit, then scraping off the excess with a credit card.

Except I forgot to go back and scrape it off :(

Now planning to use rubbing compound to take it down a bit, then try to spray lacquer it to blend in with the rest of the paintwork.

Is it going to look terrible ?

Anyone got any better ideas ? (Other than respraying the whole bonnet !)

Do you have a lump of paint on the bonnet or has it run out?

If it's a lump of paint you could (but be very careful) scribe the excess paint off with a sharp stanley then try the whole process again - very dodgy though if you don't have surgeons hands

Alternatively wet n' dry the affected area, then re-paint again.

I'm no expert at this, these are just suggestions.

yeah I would try n cut it off, then use a whole load of T-cut to smooth it out, filling with more paint if needed.

Talk to Mark (WaxWizard) before you do anything! Or failing that a friendly ChipsAway rep.

All this talk of rubbing compound, T Cut and Stanley blades has me clenched tighter than a tight thing. Especially on the bonnet. On a black car. :eek:

Actually, just remembered, another Swissol chappy has joined recently if you have no luck with Mark.

Talk to Mark, as he will explain exactly what you will have to do to the paint blob to achieve what you require. It will more than likely be a number of stages rather than just one.

My wifes 1999 1.6 LX octy in Black Magic has a very badly patched stone chip on the bonnet. Would love to see advice on how to fix it.

Stuff is called Langka and its very easy to use... even removes touch up paint thats up to six months old IIRC.. (but leaves factory paint alone)

I've found it great for sorting out messy touch up attempts and afterwards its hard to spot the chips, unless you can remember where they were..

Well, thanks for the advice, eventually I did just use rubbing compound and it worked reasonably well. It has left a slightly dull area on the paintwork, but a little bit of wax has got it almost back to the right "shine". I think some decent polish tomorrow will do the trick .... hopefully !
